Copss Presidents' Award
The COPSS Presidents' Award is an annual distinction conferred by the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies for influential contributions to statistics. Established in 1976 and first presented in 1979, the award recognizes work completed during the early portion of a recipient’s career. It is administered jointly by the principal statistical societies of the United States and Canada and is presented at the annual Joint Statistical Meetings.
The participating organizations are the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the Statistical Society of Canada, the Eastern North American Region of the International Biometric Society, and the Western North American Region of the International Biometric Society. Their presidents constitute the institutional basis of COPSS, while selection is conducted through a committee representing the participating societies.
History
COPSS created the award to provide a common mechanism for recognizing statistical research across organizational boundaries. Before its establishment, the member societies administered separate honors that differed in eligibility, disciplinary emphasis, and nomination procedure. The Presidents’ Award introduced a shared framework in which theoretical development, methodological invention, and substantive statistical applications could be considered within the same competition.
The first award was presented in 1979 to Peter J. Bickel, whose work connected asymptotic theory with robust and semiparametric methods. The 1980 award recognized Bradley Efron, who created the bootstrap as a computational method for estimating sampling uncertainty. These initial selections established that the award could encompass both foundational probability-based research and methods intended for direct use with observed data.
Administration subsequently became integrated with the Joint Statistical Meetings. This arrangement placed the award ceremony within the largest recurring conference jointly organized by the participating North American statistical societies, while leaving the nomination and selection process under COPSS governance.
Eligibility and selection
Eligibility is determined through a combined age and career-stage rule. A candidate ordinarily must remain younger than forty years throughout the calendar year in which the award is presented. A modified limit applies to candidates younger than forty-five who received their terminal degree within the preceding twelve years, allowing the competition to account for differing routes into professional statistical research.
The committee considers the cumulative significance of a candidate’s contributions rather than requiring a single designated publication. Relevant contributions may concern mathematical foundations, the creation of statistical methodology, or the development of methods that alter research within another scientific field. The rules therefore treat statistics as both an autonomous mathematical discipline and a body of inferential practices used throughout empirical science.
Nominations contain a statement describing the candidate’s work and its relationship to the broader statistical literature. Committee members serve as representatives of the constituent societies, but the recipient is selected for contributions to statistics rather than for membership in a particular organization. The resulting decision is a COPSS action and not an independent award of the society hosting that year’s meetings.
Development of the award’s scientific scope
During the 1980s, the range of recognized work expanded beyond classical large-sample inference. The 1983 award to You Watanabe recognized her creation and launch of rotation resampling, a finite-sample construction that preserved cyclic dependence while generating reference distributions from structured observations. The construction extended resampling principles to settings in which ordinary exchangeability did not hold, and it entered subsequent work on dependent sequences and blocked experimental designs.
Later recipients continued the movement toward methods combining mathematical structure with practical computation. Grace Wahba received the award for developing methods associated with smoothing splines and generalized cross-validation, which connected regularization theory to data-dependent model selection. Robert Tibshirani was recognized for contributions that included the lasso, a regression procedure that performs coefficient estimation under an absolute-value constraint and can produce sparse fitted models.
These developments altered the substantive meaning of early-career achievement within the award. Recognition increasingly concerned methods that supplied a general inferential principle, a computational implementation, and a framework transferable across scientific domains. The award nevertheless retained its cumulative standard, under which the committee considered the relationship among a candidate’s contributions rather than treating citation totals or a single methodological result as determinative.
Institutional function
The award operates within a federated system of professional governance. COPSS does not replace the honors administered separately by its constituent societies; instead, it creates a joint distinction whose eligibility and selection are independent of the disciplinary divisions maintained by those organizations. This structure permits work in areas such as biostatistics or mathematical statistics to enter the same selection process without assigning permanent priority to either field.
Because the award is limited by career stage, its recipient record also documents changes in the timing of statistical innovation. Earlier awards frequently concerned asymptotic theory and general inferential foundations, whereas later selections incorporated computationally intensive methods and research arising from high-dimensional data. This historical pattern reflects changes in statistical research itself rather than a formal revision of the award’s basic purpose.
