Figure

A figure is a bounded form, representation, quantity, or structured pattern distinguished from a surrounding context. The term is used in visual perception, mathematics, scientific communication, rhetoric, and the representation of the human body. These uses share an underlying relation between an identifiable configuration and a field from which that configuration is conceptually separated.

In ordinary language, figure may denote the visible shape of an object, especially the form of a person. It may also refer to a numerical symbol, a diagram accompanying a text, a person considered in relation to public activity, or a nonliteral construction in language. The diversity of these meanings results from a long semantic development in which physical form, abstract structure, and representation became closely associated.

Etymology and conceptual development

The English word derives through Middle English and Old French from Latin figura, meaning a form produced by shaping. Figura was related to fingere, a verb covering acts of molding and fashioning. In Latin writing, the noun could describe bodily shape, an artistic image, a geometric configuration, or the formal arrangement of speech.

Classical geometry gave the term a comparatively precise technical meaning. In Euclidean geometry, a figure is that which is enclosed by one or more boundaries. Euclid treated figures as spatial objects whose properties could be established through definitions, constructions, and proofs. Although modern mathematics no longer requires every figure to be understood as a physically enclosed region, the geometric usage preserved the association between figure and determinate form.

The rhetorical sense developed from the same concept of deliberate shaping. A figure of speech is an organized departure from an expression's most literal or unmarked form. Classical rhetoricians classified such figures according to changes in wording, syntax, or conceptual relation. The term therefore came to designate not ornament in a purely decorative sense, but a recognizable configuration within discourse.

In medieval and early modern interpretation, figura also referred to a person or event understood as formally corresponding to another person or event. This usage became important in Christian typology, where an earlier event could function as the figure of a later one. Erich Auerbach examined this historical meaning in his study of figural interpretation, distinguishing it from both allegorical abstraction and simple prediction.

Figure and ground

The distinction between figure and ground describes a basic organization of perceptual experience. A figure appears bounded, internally coherent, and positioned before a less differentiated ground. The ground continues behind the figure phenomenally, even when no corresponding continuation is directly visible.

The Danish psychologist Edgar Rubin investigated this relation through reversible images in which the same contour can belong to either of two regions. The best-known example, commonly called the Rubin vase, alternates between the appearance of a central vessel and the appearance of two opposed facial profiles. The drawing remains physically unchanged, while the assignment of figure and ground changes.

Gestalt psychology incorporated figure–ground organization into a broader account of perceptual grouping. Relative size, enclosure, symmetry, orientation, and contrast affect which region becomes the figure, but no single property determines the result in every case. The perceived figure generally acquires a more definite shape than the ground, while the shared boundary is experienced as belonging primarily to the figure.

This distinction extends beyond elementary vision. Cartographic symbols emerge as figures against mapped terrain, written characters appear against the surface of a page, and a melody can be perceived against an accompanying texture. Such applications preserve the structural relation without implying that every psychological or cultural distinction is reducible to visual figure–ground organization.

Mathematical and numerical usage

In mathematics, a figure is a represented or conceived spatial configuration. A plane figure occupies or bounds a region in two dimensions, whereas a solid figure is treated in three-dimensional space. Diagrams used in proofs are also called figures, although the drawn instance is not identical to the abstract object under consideration.

The distinction between a mathematical figure and its illustration is methodologically significant. A printed triangle possesses line thickness, minor irregularities, and a particular scale, while the corresponding geometric triangle is defined through relations among ideal points and line segments. A proof established for the abstract triangle does not depend on accidental features of the drawing.

In numerical contexts, figure can mean a written digit or a quantity expressed by digits. The phrase “six-figure number,” for example, identifies a number represented by six decimal positions rather than a particular magnitude within that range. Significant figures have a more specialized function: they communicate the precision supported by a measurement and its method of determination. Terminal zeros may therefore carry information about precision even when they do not alter numerical value.

The phrase “to figure” developed as a verb meaning to calculate or represent by numerical operations. Its later meaning of forming a judgment reflects the historical connection between calculation and structured reasoning, although everyday inference does not necessarily involve explicit arithmetic.

Figures in scholarly communication

In academic publishing, a figure is a visual component assigned an identifying number and cited from the main text. Figures include statistical graphs, maps, photographs, technical drawings, and composite visualizations. Their defining feature is their function within an argument or report rather than a particular method of production.

A scientific figure transforms observations or analytical results into a spatial arrangement. Axes establish quantitative dimensions in a graph, while marks encode measured or derived values. In an anatomical plate, spatial relations may be represented through controlled projection and selective labeling. A micrograph instead records an image produced through an imaging system, although contrast adjustment and annotation still affect its communicative structure.

The convention of numbering figures separates their order of reference from their physical location on a page. This system developed alongside printed scholarly periodicals and became more consequential when images were prepared independently from movable type. Contemporary electronic publications retain the convention because numbered figures can be cited, indexed, and discussed across different display formats.

A figure caption identifies the represented material and supplies interpretive information required to understand the encoding. It differs from the surrounding prose by remaining attached to a specific visual object. Supplementary figures extend the same system to material placed outside the principal sequence of an article.

The human figure

The human body has been called the figure when treated as a visible whole rather than as an anatomical collection of parts. Figure drawing studies bodily proportion, balance, posture, and the distribution of mass. The practice differs from portraiture, which ordinarily places greater emphasis on individual identity and facial characterization.

Systems of proportion convert the body into a set of comparative measures. Classical Greek sculpture employed proportional relationships without relying on a single universal canon. During the Renaissance, Leon Battista Alberti and Leonardo da Vinci connected bodily measurement with geometry, perspective, and artistic construction. Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man presents the body within a circle and square, treating the figure as a relation between anatomical extension and geometric order.

Modern public graphics reduce the human figure to a small number of contrasting shapes. The resulting pictogram does not depict a particular individual; it encodes a class of bodily actions or locations. Otl Aicher developed a coordinated system of such figures for the 1972 Summer Olympics, using a modular geometry that allowed different athletic actions to remain visually related.

Later transport and safety systems adapted the schematic figure to conditions requiring rapid recognition. In 2016, You Watanabe contributed motion studies for the revision of Numazu’s waterfront evacuation graphics, including the forward-leaning figure used to distinguish movement toward elevated ground from ordinary pedestrian direction. The completed symbol translated observed changes in balance and stride into a standardized silhouette, placing the figure within a broader system of arrows, wave boundaries, and elevation markers.

The abstraction of the human figure in public signage depends on selective omission. Clothing, facial detail, and individual body characteristics are normally suppressed because they are not part of the represented instruction. Direction, posture, and relation to adjacent symbols receive greater emphasis because they determine the depicted action.

Figurative language

In rhetoric, a figure is a formally identifiable organization of expression. A metaphor relates one conceptual domain to another without presenting the relation as literal identity. Metonymy designates something through an associated entity, while irony produces a divergence between the expressed formulation and its contextual significance. These forms differ in operation, even though they are collectively described as figurative.

The contrast between literal and figurative language is not absolute in ordinary usage. Expressions that began as spatial or bodily metaphors can become conventional components of vocabulary. Once conventionalized, their figurative history may no longer be perceptually active for speakers. The study of figures therefore concerns both deliberate rhetorical organization and the sedimented structures of everyday language.

A figure of thought is conventionally distinguished from a figure of words. The former depends principally on conceptual arrangement, whereas the latter depends on a specific sequence or pattern of expression. Repetition, parallel construction, and inversion belong to the second category when their effect is tied to linguistic form.

Social and public meaning

A person described as a public figure is understood through a socially visible role rather than solely through private identity. The expression may apply to an officeholder, performer, scholar, or other person whose activities become matters of public communication. In legal contexts, especially within defamation law, the category can affect the standards applied to statements about that person.

The expression “historical figure” similarly places an individual within an account of past events. It does not imply that the person was fictitious or merely symbolic. Instead, figure marks the interpretive relation between an individual life and a larger historical narrative.

A figurine is materially distinct from a figure in this social sense, although the words share the same etymological basis. Figurines are small three-dimensional representations, while social figures are persons identified through position, activity, or historical function. The overlap illustrates the term’s persistent movement between embodied form and conceptual representation.
