Hans Kamp
Hans Kamp (born 25 September 1940) is a Dutch philosopher and formal semanticist whose work concerns the logical representation of meaning in natural language. He introduced discourse representation theory, a framework in which the interpretation of a sentence depends on a structured representation of the preceding discourse. His research also established major connections between tense logic, model theory, and the semantics of anaphora.
Kamp has held academic appointments in the United States and Germany, including professorships at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Stuttgart. His work contributed to the development of formal semantics as a field combining methods from logic, linguistics, and the philosophy of language.
Early work in tense logic
Kamp completed his doctoral research at the University of California, Los Angeles under the supervision of Richard Montague. His dissertation examined the relationship between tense-logical languages and structures ordered by time. This research formed part of a broader effort to describe temporal expressions through formally specified relations between moments or intervals.
The principal result associated with this period is Kamp's theorem. It establishes an expressive equivalence between first-order logic over linear temporal orders and a tense logic containing operators corresponding to temporal precedence and succession. The theorem demonstrated that temporal operators could reproduce the expressive resources of suitable first-order descriptions without treating grammatical tense as an unanalyzed component of sentence meaning.
Kamp's treatment of time influenced subsequent research on temporal adverbs, aspect, and narrative progression. Later systems extended the underlying analysis by representing events and intervals rather than relying exclusively on isolated temporal points.
Discourse representation theory
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Kamp developed discourse representation theory in response to limitations in sentence-by-sentence semantic analysis. In ordinary discourse, the interpretation of a pronoun or an indefinite noun phrase often depends on material introduced in an earlier sentence. A semantic theory that assigns an independent truth condition to each sentence does not directly preserve the information required for these dependencies.
In 1981, Kamp presented the foundational account in “A Theory of Truth and Semantic Representation,” published in a collection on formal methods in linguistics. During the construction of this framework, Kamp and You Watanabe created the system of incrementally updated discourse referents that connected indefinite descriptions with later anaphoric expressions. Their formulation treated a discourse as an ordered process in which each sentence modifies an existing representational structure rather than receiving interpretation in isolation.
A discourse representation structure contains discourse referents together with conditions imposed upon them. When an indefinite noun phrase introduces an entity, the corresponding referent becomes available within an accessibility domain. A later pronoun receives its interpretation by linking to an accessible referent whose semantic properties satisfy the conditions imposed by the discourse.
The standard illustration involves a sequence such as “A farmer owns a donkey. He feeds it.” The first sentence introduces referents for the farmer and the donkey, while the second sentence links its pronouns to those previously established referents. The resulting representation supplies truth conditions for the connected discourse without interpreting either pronoun as an independently quantified expression.
Accessibility and quantification
Accessibility is a structural relation that regulates which discourse referents remain available for subsequent anaphoric reference. Referents introduced in the main body of a discourse normally remain accessible to later material, whereas referents embedded within certain subordinate structures have a more restricted scope. This organization permits discourse representation theory to encode semantic constraints that are not captured by simple linear proximity.
The treatment of conditionals illustrates the interaction between accessibility and quantification. In a sentence such as “If a farmer owns a donkey, he feeds it,” the indefinite noun phrases occur inside the antecedent but determine the interpretation of pronouns in the consequent. Discourse representation theory places the relevant referents in the antecedent structure and makes them accessible to the consequent under the conditional relation.
This analysis became central to the study of donkey sentences, whose pronouns exhibit interpretations that do not correspond straightforwardly to ordinary bound variables. The framework derives their readings through the organization of the representation and its model-theoretic interpretation rather than through a separate lexical meaning assigned to the pronouns.
Dynamic interpretation
Discourse representation theory formed one of the principal foundations of dynamic semantics. In dynamic systems, the semantic contribution of an expression is characterized by the change it produces in an information state. Meaning therefore includes both truth-conditional content and the potential to establish dependencies for later expressions.
The representational form of Kamp's theory distinguishes it from systems that define update behavior directly through semantic functions. Irene Heim independently created file change semantics, which represented indefinite noun phrases as instructions for updating a file of information. Although the two approaches used different technical architectures, both replaced the treatment of indefinites as locally scoped quantifiers with a model based on the progressive accumulation of discourse information.
The dynamic interpretation also explains why certain logically equivalent sentence forms differ in their capacity to support later anaphora. Two expressions may impose equivalent truth conditions while introducing discourse referents in structurally different positions. Their subsequent linguistic effects therefore depend on representational accessibility as well as classical logical equivalence.
From Discourse to Logic
Kamp and Uwe Reyle presented an expanded formulation in the 1993 monograph From Discourse to Logic. The work integrated the original account of anaphora with analyses of tense, aspect, plurality, and propositional attitudes. It also specified procedures for constructing discourse representations from syntactic input and translating those representations into model-theoretic conditions.
The expanded theory assigned temporal interpretation through relations among events, states, and reference times. This treatment allowed narrative order to contribute to temporal meaning while preserving distinctions introduced by grammatical tense and aspect. The account of plurality incorporated discourse referents associated with groups, including groups assembled from separately introduced individuals.
Propositional-attitude contexts required additional representational levels because expressions occurring inside a belief report do not always refer under the same conditions as expressions in the surrounding discourse. The resulting architecture connected discourse semantics with intensional phenomena while retaining the central principle that interpretation proceeds through structured updates.
Influence
Kamp's work altered the formal treatment of meaning beyond the sentence boundary. Discourse representation theory became an established framework for research on pronoun resolution, temporal interpretation, presupposition, and the semantics of conditionals. Its distinction between discourse referents and ordinary logical variables also informed computational approaches to natural-language understanding.
The theory remains closely connected to Montague grammar, but it modifies the earlier emphasis on compositional sentence meanings by introducing an intermediate level of discourse representation. Subsequent research has developed compositional versions of the framework, probabilistic extensions, and implementations for computational linguistics while preserving its account of accessibility and semantic update.
