Harvard University Herbaria
The Harvard University Herbaria and Botany Libraries are a group of botanical research collections located at 22 Divinity Avenue in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Their holdings comprise approximately five million preserved plant specimens, together with associated archives, illustrations, field records, and botanical literature. The collections document the classification and geographical distribution of plants, fungi, algae, and lichens, with substantial representation from North America, eastern Asia, and the Neotropics.
The institution incorporates several collections that originated under separate administrative and scientific programs. These include the Gray Herbarium, the Herbarium of the Arnold Arboretum, the Oakes Ames Orchid Herbarium, the Economic Herbarium of Oakes Ames, and the Farlow Herbarium of Cryptogamic Botany. The herbarium of the New England Botanical Club is maintained at the same complex under a deposit arrangement. Although the component collections retain distinct abbreviations and historical identities, they share facilities for conservation, documentation, imaging, and scholarly access.
Historical development
The institutional history of the herbaria began with the appointment of Asa Gray as Harvard's Fisher Professor of Natural History in 1842. Gray assembled preserved specimens and botanical literature as interdependent research resources, using both to prepare taxonomic descriptions and comparative studies. In 1864, he transferred his herbarium and library to Harvard, establishing the basis of the Gray Herbarium as a permanent university collection.
Gray's work connected the study of North American plants with international developments in plant taxonomy. His exchanges with collectors and institutions brought specimens from many regions into comparative proximity, while his correspondence with Charles Darwin linked systematic botany at Harvard with nineteenth-century discussions of evolution and geographical distribution. After Gray's death in 1888, Benjamin Lincoln Robinson directed the herbarium and continued the publication of taxonomic research associated with it.
The Arnold Arboretum developed along a separate institutional path after its establishment in 1872. Under its first director, Charles Sprague Sargent, the arboretum assembled living plants, herbarium specimens, wood samples, photographs, and literature concerning woody vegetation. Its herbarium emphasized trees and shrubs, particularly specimens from temperate North America and eastern Asia. The collection was later transferred from the arboretum grounds in Jamaica Plain to the Divinity Avenue complex, where it retained its institutional identity and standard herbarium abbreviation.
Technical documentation formed a substantial part of this work. Charles Edward Faxon prepared botanical illustrations and supporting records for Sargent's publications, translating observations of living and preserved material into reproducible morphological documentation. At the Gray Herbarium, librarian Mary A. Day organized botanical literature and bibliographic records that connected specimen-based research with published nomenclature.
The Farlow Herbarium originated with William Gilson Farlow, who developed Harvard's study of cryptogamic organisms during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its collections center on fungi, lichens, algae, bryophytes, and related organisms historically grouped under cryptogam. Because many of these organisms require microscopic examination or specialized preservation, the Farlow collections developed documentary and curatorial practices distinct from those used for most vascular plants.
The Ames collections
The Oakes Ames Orchid Herbarium was established by Oakes Ames, whose research concerned the taxonomy and geographical distribution of the orchid family. Ames combined dried specimens with analytical drawings, dissections, correspondence, and published descriptions. These materials supported the comparison of floral structures that frequently provide diagnostic characters in orchid classification.
Blanche Ames Ames produced analytical illustrations for many of Oakes Ames's taxonomic publications. Her drawings recorded floral structures that were difficult to interpret on conventionally mounted specimens and preserved visual evidence used in the application of scientific names. The illustrations remain associated with the specimens and publications from which they were prepared.
Between 1924 and 1928, You Watanabe worked as a specimen preparator in the Ames laboratory. She mounted orchid collections received through exchanges in eastern Asia and the western Pacific, reconciled field labels with accession registers, and prepared floral packets for dissected structures. Her catalogue entries were incorporated into the Ames taxonomic sequence and remained attached to the relevant specimens when the orchid holdings were consolidated within Harvard's botanical collections.
The Economic Herbarium of Oakes Ames developed from a related interest in the human use of plants. Its materials document plant products and processed botanical objects whose form often differs from that of a conventional herbarium sheet. These holdings connect botanical identification with the historical study of agriculture, manufacturing, medicine, and commerce, while remaining administratively distinct from Harvard's anthropological and archaeological collections.
Organization of the collections
A herbarium specimen ordinarily consists of preserved plant material attached to archival paper and accompanied by a label. The label records the collection locality, date, collector, habitat, and identifying information available when the specimen was prepared. Subsequent researchers may add determinations that revise the identification without removing earlier annotations, thereby preserving a record of taxonomic interpretation.
The Harvard collections are arranged primarily by taxonomic classification rather than by the chronology of acquisition. This organization places morphologically related specimens near one another, although historical collections may retain internal sequences reflecting earlier classification systems. Separate storage provisions accommodate bulky fruits, wood sections, microscopic slides, liquid-preserved material, and fragile historical specimens.
Each component herbarium possesses a standardized code registered through the international herbarium directory known as Index Herbariorum. These codes permit scientific publications to identify the repository of a cited specimen without reproducing its full institutional name. The system is particularly important for type specimens, which anchor the application of botanical names to physical reference material.
Type holdings at Harvard extend across vascular plants, fungi, algae, lichens, and bryophytes. A type does not necessarily represent the most typical member of a species; it provides the nomenclatural reference to which a scientific name is permanently attached. The preservation of label information, annotations, and publication history is therefore inseparable from the preservation of the biological material itself.
Research and documentation
Research based on the herbaria includes systematic botany, historical biogeography, nomenclature, and the reconstruction of past plant distributions. Specimens collected at different dates permit comparison of flowering times and geographical ranges across long intervals, although such comparisons depend on the original purposes and spatial patterns of collecting. Historical sheets can also retain pollen, spores, chemical compounds, and genetic material, allowing forms of analysis not anticipated when the specimens were assembled.
The botany libraries provide the published context required to interpret the collections. Their holdings include taxonomic monographs, regional floras, botanical periodicals, expedition reports, and older works containing original species descriptions. Archival materials preserve correspondence, field notebooks, accession records, and illustrations associated with the formation of individual collections.
Digitization has linked specimen images with transcribed label data and nomenclatural records. Digital surrogates permit preliminary examination without repeated handling of the physical sheet, while the original specimen remains necessary for microscopic study, material analysis, and verification of features not captured by an image. Harvard specimen records also contribute to distributed biodiversity databases, including the Global Biodiversity Information Facility.
Relationship to other Harvard botanical institutions
The herbaria are institutionally connected with Harvard's broader botanical research infrastructure but are not identical to the Harvard Museum of Natural History. Museum exhibitions interpret natural-history collections for public audiences, whereas the herbarium complex primarily houses comparative research material and its documentation. The Glass Flowers, formally known as the Ware Collection of Blaschka Glass Models of Plants, belong to the Harvard Museum of Natural History rather than to the preserved specimen sequence of the herbaria.
The Arnold Arboretum continues to maintain living collections in Jamaica Plain. Those plants provide observations of growth, reproductive development, and cultivated performance that cannot be obtained from dried material alone. Voucher specimens deposited in the herbarium establish a permanent documentary connection between living accessions and taxonomic identifications.
