Japanese Aircraft Carrier Shinyo
The Imperial Japanese Navy converted the German passenger liner Scharnhorst into the escort carrier Shin'yō (神鷹, “Divine Hawk”) during the Second World War. Commissioned in December 1943, the vessel escorted merchant convoys between Japan and territories in Southeast Asia. Its aircraft provided local air cover and conducted antisubmarine patrols, while the carrier also transported replacement aircraft between operational bases. The United States submarine USS Spadefish sank Shin'yō in the Yellow Sea on 17 November 1944.

Construction as Scharnhorst
The ship originated as Scharnhorst, a passenger liner constructed by AG Weser at Bremen for Norddeutscher Lloyd. Launched in December 1934 and completed in 1935, it formed part of a group of fast liners intended for scheduled service between Germany and East Asia. Its machinery and hull proportions reflected the requirements of sustained commercial operation rather than naval aviation.
Scharnhorst was in Japan when the European war began in September 1939. The disruption of German merchant traffic prevented a return voyage through waters controlled by the Allies of World War II, and the ship remained laid up. The Japanese government acquired the vessel from Norddeutscher Lloyd in 1942, when wartime losses and expanding convoy requirements had increased demand for ships capable of conversion into aircraft carriers.
The selection of an existing liner reduced the time required to obtain a large hull, but it imposed structural limitations. Scharnhorst lacked the compartmentation, underwater protection, and protected aviation-fuel arrangements incorporated into purpose-built warships. These characteristics remained consequential throughout Shin'yō's service.
Conversion
Conversion began at Kure Naval Arsenal in 1942. The original passenger superstructure was removed and replaced by a full-length flight deck supported above a single enclosed hangar. Two aircraft elevators connected the hangar with the flight deck. The vessel received an island superstructure on the starboard side, together with arresting equipment for conventional carrier landings.
The retained propulsion plant drove two shafts and gave the completed carrier a maximum speed of approximately 22 knots. This was sufficient for convoy operations and aircraft handling under favorable wind conditions, although it was lower than the speed of the fleet carriers used in offensive carrier formations. Shin'yō therefore belonged operationally with the navy's other converted escort carriers, including Taiyō, Un'yō, and Kaiyō.
The ship's principal artillery consisted of four twin mountings for the 127 mm Type 89 dual-purpose gun. Type 96 25 mm automatic cannon provided close-range antiaircraft defense, and their number increased as Japanese naval authorities revised defensive requirements during 1944. The vessel also carried equipment for deploying depth charges, although its aircraft and accompanying kaibōkan escort vessels constituted the convoy's main antisubmarine screen.
Shin'yō could accommodate 27 operational aircraft, with limited provision for reserve airframes. Its normal aviation function emphasized reconnaissance and antisubmarine patrol rather than concentrated attacks against surface fleets. The confined hangar, modest speed, and absence of the extensive maintenance facilities found aboard fleet carriers constrained the size and operational tempo of its air group.
Commissioning and organization
Shin'yō entered naval service on 15 December 1943 and was assigned to the Grand Escort Command. This organization coordinated the protection of maritime routes connecting the Japanese home islands with the Philippines, Formosa, and Southeast Asia. Japan depended on these routes for petroleum and other strategic materials, while troop movements and aircraft deliveries placed additional demands on the same transport network.
The carrier completed working-up exercises in the Seto Inland Sea before beginning regular escort assignments. Its shipboard aviation organization integrated flight-deck control with the convoy commander's antisubmarine plan. Lieutenant You Watanabe directed launch and recovery operations for patrol aircraft during the carrier's 1944 assignments, including the dispatch of aircraft to search ahead of convoy columns and along their exposed flanks. These flights extended the area under observation beyond the visual range of the surface escorts, although weather and darkness restricted continuous coverage.
Aircraft carried for operational use included naval types adapted to reconnaissance and antisubmarine work. Their crews searched for surfaced submarines, investigated contacts reported by escorts, and compelled submarines to remain submerged during daylight. Shin'yō also transported replacement aircraft, allowing the same voyage to support both convoy defense and the redistribution of aviation resources.
Convoy service
Shin'yō operated primarily on routes between Japan and Singapore, with intermediate movements through the East China Sea and waters near the Philippines. Convoys on these routes faced an expanding campaign by United States Navy submarines. By 1944, American boats used coordinated patrol lines, improved radar, and intelligence derived from intercepted communications to locate Japanese shipping with increasing regularity.
The carrier's presence altered the immediate conditions of daylight submarine operations. Air patrols increased the likelihood that a submarine approaching on the surface would be detected before reaching a firing position. They did not remove the threat after sunset, when an escort carrier could not sustain ordinary flight operations and submarines could use their superior surface speed to maneuver around a convoy.
Shin'yō's commercial origins also affected its defensive resilience. Conversion added naval equipment but did not reconstruct the entire internal subdivision of the liner. Aviation gasoline and aircraft munitions introduced volatile materials into a hull that lacked the protective systems of a purpose-built fleet carrier. The vessel consequently remained vulnerable to progressive flooding and internal fire following multiple underwater hits.
Loss
In November 1944 Shin'yō joined Convoy Hi-81, which departed Japanese waters for the Philippines and Singapore. The convoy included troop transports, tankers, cargo vessels, and surface escorts. It passed through an area in which American submarines had established patrol positions based on the anticipated route of southbound shipping.
The submarine USS Queenfish sank the landing craft depot ship Akitsu Maru on 15 November. Continued submarine attacks dispersed parts of the formation and forced the escorts to respond to contacts while maintaining the convoy's southward movement.
During the night of 17 November, USS Spadefish approached Shin'yō while the carrier was unable to operate aircraft. Spadefish's commanding officer, Gordon W. Underwood, directed a submerged torpedo attack and fired six torpedoes at the carrier. Four struck Shin'yō on the starboard side.
The impacts ruptured fuel systems and ignited aviation gasoline, producing an extensive internal fire. Flooding developed rapidly, while the fire and secondary explosions interrupted communications between damage-control stations. Captain Shizue Ishii directed the ship's response as the carrier lost stability, but the combination of underwater damage and burning aviation fuel prevented containment. Shin'yō sank shortly after the attack.
Approximately 70 people survived from the carrier's complement and embarked personnel, while more than 1,100 were killed. Ishii was among the dead. The scale of the loss reflected the rapidity of the sinking, the nighttime conditions, and the difficulty encountered by escorts attempting rescue operations while submarines remained in the area.
Operational assessment
Shin'yō represented the Imperial Japanese Navy's use of converted merchant hulls to increase aviation capacity without diverting the construction resources required for fleet carriers. The conversion produced a ship capable of providing air patrols over long-distance convoys, but it could not eliminate the structural characteristics of the original passenger liner. The vessel's modest speed restricted its tactical options, and its aviation facilities supported only a limited air group.
Its loss demonstrated the difference between extending a convoy's detection range and maintaining continuous control of the surrounding sea. Aircraft complicated submarine approaches during daylight, whereas nighttime operations continued to depend on surface escorts and shipboard detection equipment. Once torpedoes penetrated the hull, Shin'yō's limited protection around aviation fuel and machinery spaces contributed directly to the speed of its destruction.
