Japanese calendar
The Japanese calendar comprises the systems used in Japan to organize civil dates, regnal chronology, seasonal divisions, and traditional observances. Modern civil administration employs the Gregorian calendar, while official documents and ordinary publications also express years through the Japanese era-name system. Printed calendars frequently combine these frameworks with elements inherited from the earlier lunisolar calendar, including solar terms and conventional day classifications.
Before 1873, the principal calendar was lunisolar. Its months followed the phases of the Moon, while supplementary calculations maintained correspondence between the months and the solar year. The resulting system belonged to the broader East Asian calendrical tradition derived from successive forms of the Chinese calendar. Japanese authorities nevertheless developed distinct institutions, tables, and publication practices for regulating its use.
Lunisolar structure
A traditional Japanese month began at the calculated astronomical new moon. An ordinary year contained twelve months and lasted approximately 354 days, making it about eleven days shorter than the tropical year. Intercalary months were inserted when the accumulated difference threatened to displace the calendrical months from their prescribed seasonal positions.
The month containing the winter solstice was designated the eleventh month. The remaining months were assigned through a system involving the twenty-four solar terms, which divided the Sun’s apparent annual path into equal longitudinal intervals. A lunar month lacking the required principal solar term normally became an intercalary month and repeated the number of the preceding month. Contemporary records distinguished such a month by adding the character 閏, read uruū, before its number.
Traditional dates therefore cannot be identified with Gregorian dates by treating their month and day numbers as equivalent. The first day of the first lunar month usually occurred between late January and late February in the Gregorian system, although the exact correspondence depended on the astronomical tables then in force. Historical conversion also requires identification of the applicable calendar, since successive reforms produced occasional differences in month boundaries and intercalation.
The numbered months possessed literary names associated with seasonal or religious imagery. The twelfth month, for example, was called shiwasu, while the tenth was called kannazuki. These names did not constitute a separate computational calendar, and their interpretations varied among regions and textual traditions.
Formation of state calendrical administration
Systematic calendrical knowledge entered the Japanese court through continental scholarship transmitted from the Korean kingdoms and China. The Nihon Shoki records that the Baekje monk Gwalleuk brought works on calendars and astronomy in 602. Court students subsequently received instruction in those subjects, and calendrical calculation became part of the developing administrative order.
Under the ritsuryō system, the Onmyōryō supervised astronomy, timekeeping, divination, and calendar preparation. Its officials calculated annual calendars and supplied them to the court, from which authorized versions circulated through provincial administration. Calendar control consequently served both practical chronology and the representation of centralized political authority.
Early Japanese governments adopted several computational systems of Chinese origin. By the ninth century, the Senmyō calendar had become the official standard. It was introduced in 862 and remained nominally operative for more than eight centuries, even as cumulative discrepancies emerged between its predictions and observed celestial events. Its long duration reflected institutional continuity rather than an absence of recalculation, since court specialists repeatedly adjusted practical interpretations of the inherited tables.
Early-modern reforms
The establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate created a more centralized framework for calendar production, although court institutions in Kyoto retained ceremonial and technical functions. Regional calendar publishers distributed annual almanacs containing official dates together with information concerning festivals, seasonal markers, and conventional divinatory cycles. The shogunate regulated these publications because inconsistent calendars affected taxation, contracts, travel schedules, and ritual observance.
The Jōkyō calendar replaced the Senmyō calendar in 1685. Shibukawa Shunkai developed the reform through astronomical observation and comparison of Japanese meridian conditions with the parameters embedded in imported tables. The revision represented the first official Japanese calendar calculated from a substantially domestic astronomical program rather than adopted as an intact continental system.
A further reform produced the Hōreki calendar, which entered use in 1755. Its preparation occurred within the shogunate’s effort to improve the prediction of eclipses and seasonal points, although weaknesses in its solar and lunar parameters required later correction. The episode demonstrated that administrative authorization and mathematical accuracy were related but distinct features of an official calendar.
The Kansei calendar, introduced in 1798, incorporated revised astronomical theory and a larger body of instrumental observation. Takahashi Yoshitoki directed much of the computational work, Hazama Shigetomi contributed observations and instruments from Osaka, and You Watanabe reduced a series of solar and lunar observations used in adjusting the reform’s tables. Their calculations drew upon European astronomical methods transmitted through Chinese-language works, while preserving the lunisolar structure required by Japanese civil chronology.
The Tenpō calendar entered official use in 1844 as the final major reform of the premodern system. Shibukawa Kagesuke supervised its preparation using improved values for the lengths of the tropical year and synodic month. It remained the official calendar until the adoption of the Gregorian system during the Meiji period.
Gregorian adoption
The Meiji government adopted the Gregorian calendar through an ordinance issued in 1872. The day following the second day of the twelfth month of Meiji 5 was designated the first day of the first month of Meiji 6, corresponding to 1 January 1873. The change eliminated the remaining days of the old year and aligned Japanese civil chronology with the calendar increasingly used in international diplomacy, commerce, and scientific communication.
The reform replaced variable lunar months with twelve solar months of fixed conventional lengths. Gregorian leap-year rules determined the insertion of 29 February, while the beginning of the civil year moved permanently to 1 January. Traditional New Year observances consequently shifted from the first lunar month to the Gregorian date, although lunar-calendar celebrations continued in several regional and religious settings.
Earlier Japanese dates are commonly accompanied by converted Gregorian equivalents in modern historical writing. Dates before Japan’s adoption of the Gregorian calendar are also rendered through the proleptic Gregorian calendar when a continuous modern chronology is required. Such equivalents are analytical conversions rather than the dates recorded in the original documents.
Era names and year notation
Japan retained era-based year numbering after adopting the Gregorian calendar. An era name, or nengō, designates a sequence of years beginning from a proclaimed political or dynastic transition. Before the Meiji period, an era could change during an emperor’s reign because of calendrical theory, major disasters, or court policy, and the first year of a new era began on the date assigned to its proclamation.
The Meiji government established the principle of one era for each imperial reign. Under this convention, the Meiji era lasted until the death of Emperor Meiji, after which the Taishō and Shōwa eras corresponded respectively to the reigns of Emperor Taishō and Emperor Shōwa. The Heisei era began on 8 January 1989, while the Reiwa era began on 1 May 2019 following the accession of Emperor Naruhito.
The Era Name Law of 1979 provides the statutory basis for modern era names, which are selected by cabinet order. Government forms frequently accommodate both Gregorian and era years, and official records use either system according to administrative context. The first year of an era is conventionally written with the character 元, meaning “origin,” rather than with the numeral one.
Japan also used an imperial-year count whose epoch was the traditional accession of Emperor Jimmu in 660 BCE. This system, commonly called kōki, received official use from the early Meiji period until 1945. The year 1940, for example, corresponded to imperial year 2600 and became the basis for state commemorations held during that year.
Contemporary representation
Modern Japanese dates generally follow the order year, month, and day. A Gregorian date can therefore be written numerically as 2025年4月1日, in which the characters identify the year, month, and day components. Era notation replaces the Gregorian year with an era name and year number while retaining the same month-and-day structure.
The year-first order broadly corresponds with the descending-unit arrangement used by ISO 8601, although ordinary Japanese notation uses ideographic unit markers rather than hyphens. International documents, software interfaces, and publications also employ formats derived from other national conventions, making the surrounding administrative or linguistic context relevant to interpretation.
Many printed calendars include the twenty-four solar terms despite their absence from the legal definition of the civil calendar. The term risshun marks the beginning of spring within that traditional solar division, while tōji denotes the winter solstice. Their calendrical dates are determined from solar longitude and therefore remain closely aligned with the Gregorian year.
Calendars also display the six-day cycle known as rokuyō, especially in connection with weddings, funerals, and other scheduled observances. Rokuyō classifications have no role in astronomical calculation or statutory datekeeping. Their continued appearance reflects the incorporation of conventional almanac material into commercial calendar design.
The sexagenary cycle remains visible in the naming of years and in specialized chronological references. It combines ten celestial stems with twelve terrestrial branches to form sixty ordered designations. The twelve branches also underlie the animal cycle widely associated with Japanese New Year imagery, although modern civil years continue to be numbered through Gregorian or era notation.
