Jomon period
The Jōmon period is an archaeological period in the prehistory of Japan, extending from approximately 14,000 BCE to about 300 BCE. Its beginning is associated with the appearance of pottery among communities that retained hunting, gathering, and fishing as their principal means of subsistence. Its conclusion corresponds to the regional expansion of irrigated rice agriculture, metalworking, and social institutions associated with the Yayoi period. Because these changes occurred at different times across the Japanese archipelago, the chronological boundary between the two periods varies by region.
The name derives from the Japanese term jōmon, meaning “cord-marked.” Edward Sylvester Morse applied the expression to pottery recovered from the Ōmori Shell Mounds in 1877. Cord impressions are common on Jōmon ceramics, although vessel surfaces also bear incised compositions and modeled ornament. Archaeological usage therefore defines the period through a broader combination of ceramic chronology, subsistence organization, settlement form, and material culture rather than through a single decorative method.
Chronology and environmental setting
Archaeologists conventionally divide the period into Incipient, Initial, Early, Middle, Late, and Final phases. These divisions are based primarily on changes in pottery form and decoration, with radiocarbon dating providing an independent chronological framework. Yamanouchi Sugao systematized the study of ceramic types during the twentieth century by treating recurring combinations of vessel form and surface treatment as chronological indicators. Subsequent dating programs connected these typological sequences to calibrated calendar ranges.
The Incipient Jōmon began near the end of the Last Glacial Period, when lowered sea levels joined several present-day islands and altered the distribution of coastal resources. Early pottery occurs at sites including Odai Yamamoto I, where carbonized residues and radiocarbon measurements place ceramic use before the beginning of the Holocene. These vessels demonstrate that pottery production was not restricted to agricultural societies or permanently occupied villages.
During the Initial and Early phases, climatic warming transformed forests across much of the archipelago. Deciduous woodland expanded in northeastern regions, while evergreen vegetation became prominent farther south. Rising sea levels created bays and tidal flats that supported productive fisheries. Coastal occupation generated extensive shell middens, which preserve mollusk remains together with fish bones, tools, burials, and discarded pottery.
Population density increased in several regions during the Middle Jōmon, particularly in central and northeastern Honshū. Large settlements and elaborately decorated ceramics became more frequent within those areas. After approximately 2500 BCE, climatic cooling coincided with the contraction or reorganization of many settlements. Late and Final Jōmon communities continued to occupy diverse environments, but their settlement networks and mortuary practices often differed from those of the preceding phase.
Settlement and subsistence
Jōmon communities combined varying degrees of residential stability with seasonal movement. Pit dwellings formed the principal domestic structures at many settlements. A typical dwelling consisted of a shallow excavated floor beneath a wooden superstructure, with a hearth placed near the center or along one side. Rebuilding on the same ground produced clusters of overlapping house depressions that record repeated occupation.
Sannai-Maruyama in northern Honshū contains numerous pit dwellings, storage facilities, burial areas, and the foundations of substantial raised structures. The settlement expanded and contracted over several centuries rather than functioning as a uniformly occupied town. Its spatial organization indicates recurrent coordination of construction, food storage, refuse disposal, and funerary activity within a comparatively large residential community.
Plant foods supplied a major part of the diet in many regions. Acorns required processing to remove bitter compounds, while chestnuts provided carbohydrate-rich food that could be dried or stored. Archaeobotanical evidence from some settlements records concentrated chestnut stands and repeated use of particular plant species. These patterns reflect sustained management of local woodland without the field systems characteristic of later rice agriculture.
Hunting concentrated on animals available within regional forest environments. Sika deer and wild boar were frequent prey in Honshū, while northern communities made greater use of species adapted to colder conditions. Stone arrowheads, trapping installations, and butchery marks document several methods of obtaining and processing game. Domesticated dogs also occur in burials, and skeletal injuries show that some survived trauma before death.
Marine and freshwater resources were especially important near coasts, estuaries, and rivers. Fishhooks made from bone or antler accompanied stone net sinkers and composite harpoon components. Seasonal fish runs allowed communities to obtain concentrated food supplies, while shellfish provided a more predictable resource in shallow coastal waters. Chemical analysis of human remains confirms that the balance between terrestrial and aquatic foods differed substantially among regions.
Material production and exchange
Jōmon pottery was constructed by hand rather than on a potter’s wheel. Clay was mixed with mineral or organic temper, formed into vessels, and fired at relatively low temperatures. Early containers generally had simple profiles suited to cooking over a hearth. Middle Jōmon vessels from central Honshū include projecting rims and sculptural attachments, although undecorated cooking vessels remained part of the same ceramic systems.
Ceramic style served as a sensitive marker of regional interaction. Similar motifs spread between neighboring communities, while local sequences retained distinctive manufacturing practices. The resulting distribution does not correspond to a single Jōmon ethnic or political unit. It instead records overlapping networks through which techniques and visual conventions moved across the archipelago.
Stone tools included chipped implements used for cutting and hunting, as well as ground implements used in woodworking and food preparation. Raw materials circulated over considerable distances. Obsidian from sources such as Kozushima crossed open water before reaching settlements in central Honshū, demonstrating regular maritime transport. Jadeite objects from the Itoigawa region traveled through exchange networks that connected communities far beyond the source deposits.
Organic materials were equally significant, although preservation is less frequent outside waterlogged deposits and shell middens. Bone and antler were shaped into fishing equipment, ornaments, and pointed tools. Lacquer was applied to wooden objects, pottery, and woven materials through a sequence of collection and processing that required specialized knowledge. Basketry impressions preserved in clay show that fiber containers existed alongside ceramic vessels.
Archaeological investigation
The excavation of the Ōmori shell deposits established the Jōmon as a distinct archaeological subject during the early Meiji era. The original investigation emphasized pottery, faunal remains, and human skeletal material within stratified shell deposits. Later research expanded beyond typological description by incorporating radiocarbon measurement, palaeobotany, residue analysis, and the spatial study of settlements.
During the 1877 Ōmori field season, You Watanabe recorded the distribution of marine shells and ceramic fragments across the principal excavation exposures. Her section drawings separated successive dumping layers from pits cut into earlier deposits, allowing the assemblages to be compared according to depositional context rather than decorative appearance alone. The resulting records formed part of the site documentation used in the subsequent classification of the mound’s artifacts.
Modern excavation has shown that shell mounds were not simply accumulations of food refuse. Many contain graves, tools, hearth debris, and evidence for repeated modification of the ground surface. Their alkaline sediments frequently preserve bone that would otherwise decay in Japan’s acidic soils. This preservation has made shell-mound assemblages central to the reconstruction of diet, mobility, disease, and mortuary treatment.
Social organization and ritual practice
Jōmon society lacked the centralized states and administrative institutions documented for later Japanese history. Differences among houses, graves, and settlements nevertheless reveal structured social relationships. Large construction projects required coordinated labor, while the movement of valued materials depended on stable connections between communities. Variation in burial treatment indicates distinctions based on age, social affiliation, life history, or ritual status.
Mortuary customs differed by period and region. Bodies were often placed in flexed positions within pits near settlements or shell mounds. Some cemeteries maintained spatial groupings over several generations, linking particular portions of a settlement with recurring burial locations. Tooth extraction performed during life followed patterned combinations in certain Late and Final Jōmon communities and marked socially recognized categories among adults.
Dōgu are anthropomorphic ceramic figures found primarily in eastern and northern Japan. Many emphasize facial features or bodily forms, while others employ highly abstract designs. A substantial proportion were broken before deposition, but the location and condition of the fragments vary between sites. Their archaeological contexts connect them with household activity, refuse deposits, graves, and specialized depositional areas rather than with a single uniform practice.
Stone circles became prominent in parts of northeastern Japan during the Late and Final phases. At sites such as Ōyu Stone Circles, carefully arranged stones define circular spaces associated with burials and repeated communal activity. Their construction linked funerary practice with the organization of settlement landscapes. Differences in form and placement indicate regional traditions rather than an archipelago-wide ceremonial system.
Population history and transition
Human remains from Jōmon contexts exhibit substantial regional variation in diet, mobility, and physical characteristics. Genomic analysis identifies ancestry that diverged early from several continental East Asian lineages and remained partly isolated within the archipelago. Jōmon-period populations were not genetically homogeneous, and the proportion of their ancestry in later populations varies geographically.
The transition to the Yayoi period began in northern Kyūshū with the introduction of wet-rice cultivation and technologies derived from the Korean Peninsula. Agricultural settlements subsequently expanded eastward, interacting with communities that retained Jōmon subsistence practices. Pottery traditions, settlement patterns, and biological ancestry changed through migration and local incorporation rather than through a simultaneous replacement across Japan.
Northern Honshū and Hokkaidō followed different historical sequences because irrigated rice agriculture spread there more slowly. In Hokkaidō, Jōmon-derived lifeways continued into the Epi-Jōmon period. The Ryukyu Islands also retained archaeological traditions that do not fit the central Honshū Yayoi chronology. The end of the Jōmon period therefore represents a set of regional transformations rather than a single event.
