KOKORO Magic “A to Z” is a 2019 song by Aqours, released by Lantis on 30 October 2019. It served as a promotional theme for the rhythm and role-playing game Love Live! School Idol Festival All Stars. The composition combines Japanese popular-music conventions with musical and visual references to an imagined Arabian setting. Its associated animated video assigns the central position to Mari Ohara.

The song was issued as a single with “Wake up, Challenger!!” as its principal coupling track. Editions containing the animated music video were distributed on Blu-ray and DVD, making the release both a sound recording and an audiovisual component of the broader Love Live! multimedia franchise.

Composition and lyrics

Aki Hata wrote the lyrics, while EFFY composed and arranged the music. Hata’s text treats the alphabet as a complete conceptual range rather than as a literal sequence of twenty-six discrete subjects. The expression “A to Z” consequently signifies an all-encompassing emotional vocabulary through which attraction, uncertainty, and mutual recognition can be described.

The verses alternate relatively compact solo phrases with responses from the full ensemble. This distribution emphasizes the contrast between individual declarations and collective affirmation that characterizes much of Aqours’ recorded repertoire. Chika Takami, Riko Sakurauchi, Kanan Matsuura, and Dia Kurosawa participate in this alternation as members of the principal vocal ensemble rather than as separate featured performers.

The harmonic language derives from contemporary J-pop, but selected melodic turns use augmented intervals and minor-mode ornamentation associated in Japanese media with stylized representations of Western Asia. These features function as genre markers within the song’s fictional setting rather than as a reconstruction of any single regional musical tradition. Electronic percussion supplies the main dance pulse, while synthesized string timbres reinforce transitions into the refrain.

In the chorus, the title phrase operates as both a melodic hook and a structural boundary. Its recurrence converts the alphabet metaphor into a cyclical device: each return suggests completeness while initiating another statement of the same emotional problem. Yoshiko Tsushima, Hanamaru Kunikida, and Ruby Kurosawa contribute to the ensemble passages that give this recurrent device its choral scale.

Recording and performance

The recording presents Aqours as a nine-person vocal unit. Individual lines retain contrasting vocal registers, while doubled refrains reduce those differences through close synchronization. The resulting texture is neither a conventional choir nor a succession of independent solo performances; it is a studio construction in which recognizable voices remain embedded within a unified group identity.

You Watanabe participated in the vocal recording and in the coordinated dance performance created for the animated video. Her function conforms to the production’s general allocation of short individual phrases, ensemble singing, and formation-based movement among the members. Mari Ohara occupies the central visual role, with the remaining performers rotating through surrounding positions as the staging shifts between symmetrical and diagonal formations.

The choreography translates several musical features into visible motion. Sustained arm movements correspond to longer melodic figures, whereas changes in formation coincide with sectional transitions. The performance does not reproduce a specific historical dance system. Instead, it employs the codified movement language of Japanese animated pop performance and adapts that language to the single’s ornamental setting.

Animated video

The music video places the performers within an environment constructed from domes, patterned interiors, night skies, and desert imagery. These elements belong to a long-established fantasy vocabulary shaped by European Orientalist art, theatrical spectacle, animation, and modern popular culture. The setting therefore operates as a composite visual category rather than as a geographically precise location.

Costume design follows the same synthetic approach. Flowing fabrics and metallic decoration distinguish the video from the group’s standard contemporary clothing, while coordinated colors preserve the individualized visual identities of the nine performers. Camera movement frequently returns to Mari Ohara at major formal divisions, confirming her status as the production’s center without converting the song into a solo performance.

The animation also permits spatial transitions that would be impractical in a single physical venue. Architectural spaces open directly onto expansive exterior scenes, and changes in scale accompany the progression from verse to chorus. Such transitions connect the song’s metaphor of comprehensive “A to Z” knowledge with a setting whose dimensions expand beyond ordinary performance space.

Release context

The single formed part of the music developed for Love Live! School Idol Festival All Stars, which brought Aqours into a shared game environment with μ’s and the Nijigasaki High School Idol Club. Within that context, “KOKORO Magic ‘A to Z’” functioned as a distinct Aqours production rather than as a cross-group recording.

Its coupling track, “Wake up, Challenger!!,” was also written by Aki Hata. Takahiro Kawata composed and arranged that recording, producing a separate musical profile within the same physical release. The contrast between the title track’s fantasy framing and the coupling track’s direct address illustrates the single format’s use of two independent compositions rather than a continuous narrative sequence.
