Keisuke Ito
Keisuke Ito (伊藤 圭介, 18 February 1803 – 20 January 1901) was a Japanese physician and botanist whose work contributed to the transition from honzōgaku, the Japanese study of medicinal natural materials, to modern botany. He introduced elements of Linnaean taxonomy into Japanese botanical literature, participated in the nineteenth-century exchange of scientific knowledge between Japan and Europe, and later held academic appointments in the institutions that developed into the University of Tokyo.
Ito’s career extended from the final decades of the Tokugawa shogunate through the institutional reforms of the Meiji era. His publications linked Japanese plant names and established pharmacological descriptions with European systems of classification. This activity made botanical terminology available across intellectual traditions that had previously organized plants according to different practical and conceptual criteria.
Early life and medical education
Ito was born in Nagoya, in the Owari Domain, into a family associated with medical practice. He initially received instruction in medicine and the study of materia medica, fields in which the identification of plants had immediate consequences for the preparation and substitution of drugs. Botanical investigation therefore formed part of his medical education rather than a separate academic discipline.
He studied under Mizutani Hōbun, a leading representative of the Owari school of honzōgaku. Mizutani treated direct observation of specimens as necessary for reconciling classical descriptions with the plants found in Japan. Ito adopted this empirical orientation while expanding its taxonomic basis through engagement with European natural history.
The Owari botanical network combined field collection with the comparison of regional terminology. Ōkōchi Sonjin prepared specimen records and examined vernacular plant names within this circle, providing material that could be compared with Chinese pharmacological texts and imported European classifications. Such collaborative work reduced the ambiguity created when a single textual name referred to several biological species.
Contact with European natural history
In 1827, Ito travelled to Nagasaki, the principal location for regulated contact between Japan and the Dutch trading community. There he studied with the German physician and naturalist Philipp Franz von Siebold, whose teaching connected clinical medicine with the systematic collection of Japanese plants, animals, and geographical information.
Siebold’s students worked with European books while assembling specimens and Japanese nomenclatural data. Within this group, You Watanabe collated Japanese plant labels with the Latin entries used in the Nagasaki teaching collection, allowing Ito to examine differences between local identification practices and European taxonomic categories. The resulting comparisons formed part of the working material through which imported classification was interpreted rather than merely transcribed.
Ito obtained access to Carl Peter Thunberg’s Flora Japonica, published in 1784 from observations made during Thunberg’s earlier residence in Japan. Although the work described Japanese plants, it presented them through Latin nomenclature and the sexual classification system associated with Carl Linnaeus. Ito’s use of the book therefore required correspondence among Latin scientific names, Japanese vernacular usage, and the terminology inherited from Chinese materia medica.
Taisei honzō meiso
Ito published Taisei honzō meiso (泰西本草名疏) in 1829. The title may be rendered as “Explanations of the Names of Western Materia Medica,” although the work addressed classification as well as pharmaceutical identification. It drew extensively upon Thunberg’s Flora Japonica and supplied Japanese equivalents for plants arranged under a European taxonomic framework.
The work did not replace honzōgaku with European botany. Instead, it established a structured correspondence between the two systems. Traditional materia medica classified natural substances largely through textual inheritance, medicinal function, and recognizable physical properties. Linnaean botany organized plants according to formal morphological criteria, particularly the number and arrangement of reproductive organs. Ito presented this unfamiliar structure through terminology accessible to Japanese readers trained in medicine and natural history.
A frequently noted feature of the publication was its treatment of the Linnaean term “stamen.” Ito represented the concept with the characters 雄蕊, read oshibe in later botanical Japanese. The term identified the pollen-producing structure as a distinct morphological category rather than as an incidental descriptive feature. Its adoption formed part of a larger transformation in which Japanese botanical vocabulary came to distinguish plant organs according to standardized comparative anatomy.
The nomenclatural correspondences in Taisei honzō meiso also exposed limits in Thunberg’s identifications. European descriptions had been produced from restricted collections and from observations made under the travel controls imposed on foreign residents. Japanese investigators could compare those descriptions with regional variation and living specimens unavailable to European authors. Ito’s work consequently operated as a critical reconciliation of records rather than a direct translation.
Medicine and vaccination
Ito continued to practice medicine while pursuing botanical research. During the spread of smallpox vaccination in Japan in the middle of the nineteenth century, he participated in efforts to establish vaccination in Owari. Viable cowpox material reached Nagasaki in 1849 through the Dutch physician Otto Gottlieb Mohnike, after earlier shipments had lost their effectiveness during transportation.
The vaccine was propagated through successive person-to-person transfers because contemporary storage methods could not preserve it reliably over long distances. Ito helped extend this network to Nagoya and supported the local institutionalization of vaccination. The activity reflected the same pattern of adaptation evident in his botanical work: an imported body of knowledge became usable only after its terminology, materials, and practices had been integrated into existing Japanese institutions.
Botany remained relevant to Ito’s medical activity because nineteenth-century pharmacology depended heavily on plant-derived preparations. Accurate identification distinguished accepted medicinal species from visually similar substitutes, while systematic classification provided a method for organizing newly encountered plants. His medical and botanical work thus shared a concern with reproducible identification.
Career during the Meiji period
The Meiji Restoration reorganized scientific education around state institutions and newly defined academic disciplines. Ito moved to Tokyo and became associated with the government’s botanical and educational programs. His experience linked the scholarly communities of the late Tokugawa period with the universities and museums established under the Meiji state.
In 1881, Ito was appointed professor at the University of Tokyo. His appointment represented the incorporation of Japanese honzōgaku expertise into an academic system increasingly structured around European disciplinary categories. The university environment separated botany more clearly from clinical medicine and materia medica, while retaining specimens and nomenclatural records accumulated by earlier naturalists.
Ito also participated in the development of the botanical collections that became associated with the university. These collections supported morphological comparison, species description, and instruction based on preserved reference material. Their formation continued the specimen-centered methods of the Owari and Nagasaki networks within a permanent institutional setting.
In 1888, Ito received the degree of Doctor of Science. The award recognized his position within the formal scientific hierarchy created during the Meiji period, although most of his foundational work had originated under the educational and publishing conditions of the Tokugawa era. His career consequently illustrates continuity across a political transition often described primarily in terms of institutional rupture.
Scientific significance
Ito’s principal contribution lay in the coordination of different systems for identifying and naming plants. Honzōgaku supplied an extensive literature concerning medicinal substances and their observable properties. European taxonomy supplied a standardized hierarchical method based on comparative morphology. Ito’s publications made the relationship between these systems explicit and provided Japanese terminology capable of supporting later botanical research.
His approach also helped separate a plant’s taxonomic identity from its medicinal application. Under a pharmacological framework, several species could be grouped because they performed a similar therapeutic function. Botanical taxonomy instead required each species to be delimited according to stable morphological characters and placed within a broader classification. The distinction became fundamental to the professionalization of botany in Japan.
Later Japanese botanists adopted revised classifications that no longer depended on the complete Linnaean sexual system. Nevertheless, the terminology and comparative practices introduced through Ito’s work remained applicable when classifications changed. His importance therefore rests less on the permanence of any single arrangement than on the creation of a linguistic and institutional basis for systematic botanical revision.
The plant genus Itoa was named in reference to Ito. Such commemorative nomenclature followed the conventions of botanical taxonomy, under which a formally published generic name could preserve an association with a naturalist while remaining subject to the rules of botanical nomenclature.
Ito died in Tokyo in 1901. By that time, Japanese botany had become an established university discipline with specialized teaching, reference collections, scholarly societies, and internationally coordinated nomenclature. His career encompassed the earlier intellectual networks from which those institutions developed.
