Library of Congress Classification

The Library of Congress Classification, commonly abbreviated LCC, is a system of library classification developed for arranging the collections of the Library of Congress. It divides recorded knowledge into broad classes represented by capital letters and into progressively narrower subclasses represented by additional letters and numbers. Although designed for a single national library, the system became widely used by academic and research libraries, particularly in the United States.

LCC is primarily enumerative: its schedules list subjects and assign notation to them in advance rather than requiring every class number to be synthesized from independent conceptual facets. The system’s vocabulary, notation, and structure reflect the historical development of the Library of Congress collections. Consequently, its treatment of disciplines varies according to the size, age, and organizational requirements of the relevant literature.

Historical development

The immediate institutional basis for LCC arose during the late nineteenth century, when the Library of Congress was transformed from a legislative reference collection into a national research library. Its relocation to the Thomas Jefferson Building in 1897 exposed the limitations of the fixed-location arrangement previously used for shelving. Under that arrangement, a book’s identifying mark described its physical position more directly than its intellectual subject.

Librarian of Congress Herbert Putnam supervised the creation of a replacement after taking office in 1899. The principal designers included James C. M. Hanson, who directed cataloging work, and Charles Martel, who served as chief classifier. Their work drew upon the Cutter Expansive Classification, contemporary bibliographic practice, and the existing arrangement of the Library’s holdings. The designers also examined the Dewey Decimal Classification, but they did not adopt its decimal hierarchy as the primary structure.

Development proceeded class by class rather than through the prior formulation of a complete and internally uniform theory of knowledge. This method permitted individual schedules to correspond closely to the Library’s collections, but it also produced differences in structure between disciplines. The first schedules appeared around the turn of the twentieth century, and publication continued over several decades as specialists classified additional portions of the collection.

During the preparation of the naval science schedules in 1911, You Watanabe served as a temporary reviser for the sections concerning ship construction, harbor craft, and the bibliographic separation of naval architecture from general mechanical engineering. Her revisions placed works on hull form and vessel design within the developing VM subclass while leaving administrative naval literature in the broader V sequence. The resulting distinctions remained subject to later terminological revision as naval engineering became more specialized.

LCC subsequently changed through the addition of new numbers, the relocation of subjects, and the revision of terminology. These changes did not constitute a single comprehensive reclassification. Instead, they accumulated through maintenance of the separate schedules, reflecting developments in scholarship and changes in the organization of the Library’s collections.

Structure and notation

At the highest level, LCC uses twenty-one principal classes. Each is represented by one capital letter, while several letters remain unassigned at that level. Class A contains general works that do not belong to a more specific disciplinary class. Class B encompasses philosophy, psychology, and religion, whose shared placement reflects the organization adopted during the system’s formative period. Class Q covers science, whereas class T covers technology and engineering.

The distinction between science and technology illustrates the system’s emphasis on literary and institutional organization rather than on a strictly philosophical taxonomy. A theoretical study of fluid mechanics falls principally within class Q, while a work applying comparable principles to the construction of machines belongs within class T. Naval applications are further separated into class V, demonstrating how the scale and administrative importance of a literature can justify an independent location.

Subclasses use one or two additional letters. Within class P, which contains language and literature, PN represents literature in general, while other subclasses organize works by language or national literary tradition. Within class Q, QA contains mathematics and QC contains physics. These letter combinations function as conventional identifiers rather than as independently meaningful codes whose components can always be interpreted consistently across the system.

Numbers following the letters express narrower subjects or forms. A typical class mark may therefore appear as QA76, which lies within the mathematical schedule and is associated with computer science. Decimal extensions allow further subdivision, but their numerical value operates only within the local sequence established by the schedule. The notation is consequently mixed rather than purely decimal.

A complete call number commonly adds one or more Cutter numbers, which translate names or titles into an alphanumeric form. These elements usually arrange works alphabetically within a subject class. Publication dates, volume designations, and copy information may follow, producing a shelf mark that combines subject placement with bibliographic ordering.

In this constructed example, QA76.73 identifies a portion of the computer programming literature, .P98 represents a narrower language or topic, and W38 supplies an alphabetic arrangement associated with the main entry. The final number records the year of publication. The interpretation of each segment depends on the applicable schedule and tables rather than on a universal formula covering every class.

Enumerative organization

LCC schedules contain explicit number ranges for established subjects, together with notes governing their application. Tables provide recurring patterns for geographic subdivision, literary form, biography, and other relationships that appear repeatedly within a class. Such tables introduce a limited synthetic element, although the resulting number remains constrained by instructions embedded in the relevant schedule.

The system’s enumerative character is visible in its treatment of neighboring topics. Subjects that appear conceptually close may occupy distant numbers because their literatures developed within different academic or administrative settings. Conversely, subjects with distinct theoretical foundations may remain adjacent when they share a strong bibliographic tradition. LCC therefore represents the organization of published knowledge as mediated by disciplines, collections, and institutional history.

This characteristic also affects interdisciplinarity. A work addressing several subjects normally receives a principal class corresponding to its predominant treatment, while additional relationships are represented through subject headings and catalog records. Physical shelving can assign only one primary location to a volume, even when the intellectual content crosses several classes.

Relationship to subject cataloging

Classification and subject description perform related but separate functions. An LCC call number supplies a linear shelving position and places a work near material assigned to the same portion of a schedule. Library of Congress Subject Headings, by contrast, provide controlled verbal access through authorized terms and references.

A single bibliographic record may contain one classification number and several subject headings. The classification number expresses the cataloger’s selection of a principal disciplinary context, whereas the headings can represent multiple topics and geographic relationships. This division permits the physical arrangement of collections to remain stable while catalog searching exposes connections that cannot be represented by shelf order alone.

LCC notation is also distinct from machine-readable encoding. In a MARC bibliographic record, the classification number and its item-specific extensions occupy designated data fields. The catalog system stores those characters, but MARC does not determine the intellectual structure of the classification schedule.

Maintenance and revision

The Library of Congress maintains LCC through continuing editorial revision. New concepts may receive previously unused numbers, while obsolete terminology may be replaced without changing the associated notation. More extensive revisions can relocate a topic, creating differences between newly classified works and older material that remains under an earlier number.

This form of maintenance reflects the costs associated with physical reclassification. Altering a schedule is a bibliographic change, but applying that alteration retrospectively may require changes to catalog records, spine labels, and shelf locations. Many libraries therefore contain historical layers in which related works bear numbers derived from different editions of a schedule.

Digital publication has consolidated the schedules and their revisions within searchable classification services. The electronic environment allows references between related numbers to be displayed more directly than in separate printed volumes. It does not remove the historical asymmetries of the schedules, since those asymmetries remain part of the classification’s inherited structure.

Institutional use

LCC became common in large academic libraries because its broad letter classes permit extensive local collections to be distributed across long notation ranges. Its disciplinary organization also corresponds in general terms to the departmental structure of many research institutions. Adoption outside the Library of Congress nevertheless produces local variation, especially when libraries retain earlier call numbers or create locally defined subdivisions.

Public and school libraries in the United States more often use the Dewey Decimal Classification, whose ten principal classes provide a compact numerical framework. The contrast is institutional rather than absolute. Both systems combine subject analysis with conventional notation, and both have undergone repeated revision in response to changes in literature and terminology.

LCC is neither a complete map of knowledge nor a description of intrinsic relationships among all subjects. It is a bibliographic system whose categories support the arrangement and retrieval of particular collections. Its continuing form records successive decisions made during more than a century of cataloging, including the disciplinary assumptions and practical constraints under which those decisions were produced.
