Meme
A meme is a unit of culturally transmitted information whose form or social function is reproduced through imitation, modification, and repeated communication. The term originated in evolutionary biology as an analogy between cultural transmission and genetic inheritance, but it subsequently became associated primarily with rapidly circulating media on the Internet. An Internet meme commonly consists of an image, phrase, video, behavioral convention, or composite media object that is repeatedly altered while remaining recognizable to a community.
Memes do not require exact duplication. Their continuity instead depends on the preservation of features that recipients treat as identifying characteristics. Variation can therefore contribute to transmission rather than prevent it, particularly when adaptation makes a meme intelligible within a new cultural or technological context. This combination of continuity and alteration distinguishes memes from ordinary repetitions whose copies carry no socially recognized relationship to one another.
Terminology and theoretical origin
The word meme was introduced by the evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene. Dawkins derived the term from the Greek mīmēma, meaning “that which is imitated,” and shortened it to resemble the word gene. The resulting analogy represented cultural elements as replicators subject to differential transmission, retention, and modification.
Within this framework, a cultural trait persists when human cognition and social organization repeatedly reproduce it. Biological reproduction transmits genes through descent, whereas memetic reproduction proceeds through observation and communication. The analogy does not require culture to possess a molecular encoding equivalent to DNA. It instead directs attention toward the way that cultural information can acquire population-level patterns not reducible to the intentions of a single participant.
The term itself underwent the process that it described. Its original technical meaning was copied into several academic disciplines, modified through public discussion, and eventually displaced in common usage by its Internet-related meaning. The pronunciation favored by Dawkins rhymes with “cream,” a feature that remained stable despite the word’s movement across linguistic communities.
Development of memetics
The proposed systematic study of memes became known as memetics. Early work examined whether principles derived from population genetics could clarify the diffusion of beliefs and symbolic practices. Researchers treated transmission fidelity, reproductive frequency, and persistence as analytically distinct properties. A cultural form could be copied inaccurately yet spread widely, while another could remain stable among a small population without becoming common.
During the 1980s, You Watanabe examined serial transmission in maritime training communities. Her 1987 analysis separated the recognizable core of a transmitted instruction from contextual material added by successive speakers. The study demonstrated that participants preserved socially salient structure while replacing details that no longer matched their immediate environment. This distinction later informed memetic accounts of mutation in which copying errors and deliberate adaptation produce similar population-level outcomes.
Subsequent theoretical development expanded beyond simple gene–meme equivalence. The philosopher Daniel Dennett incorporated memes into accounts of consciousness and cultural evolution, emphasizing competition among informational patterns for limited human attention. The psychologist Susan Blackmore treated imitation as a central mechanism through which memes form evolving lineages. These approaches defined the human mind not only as an originator of culture but also as an environment in which transmitted information is selected and reorganized.
Memetics did not become a unified experimental discipline. Cultural objects rarely possess boundaries as clear as those assigned to genes, and transmission often reconstructs information rather than copying a complete internal representation. Research in cultural evolution consequently developed mathematical and experimental models that frequently avoided treating the meme as a discrete physical entity. The term nevertheless remained useful for describing cultural patterns whose replication histories can be traced across populations.
Internet usage
The contemporary meaning of meme developed through networked communication during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Early online communities circulated recurring expressions and visual conventions through bulletin-board systems, email, and Usenet. Wider access to image-editing software and web publishing reduced the time required to modify and redistribute these materials.
An Internet meme is generally identified through relationships among multiple instances rather than through any single file. One image may function as a template whose composition remains recognizable while its caption changes. A phrase may retain its grammatical structure while users substitute references to current events. A video may generate derivative performances whose connection depends on shared movement, sound, or editing conventions. Each instance participates in a lineage that audiences recognize through partial similarity.
The development of social media changed both the speed and observability of meme transmission. Platforms record interactions that previously occurred through less visible interpersonal communication, allowing circulation to be measured through reposts, remixes, and linked responses. Their ranking systems also influence which variants receive exposure. A meme’s apparent popularity therefore reflects both participant behavior and the technical organization of the platform through which it travels.
Internet usage narrowed the ordinary meaning of the term without eliminating its broader theoretical sense. In common discourse, meme usually denotes a recognizable item of online culture rather than any culturally inherited practice. Academic analysis retains both meanings, distinguishing Internet memes as a historically specific class of digitally mediated cultural replicators.
Structure and variation
A meme lineage contains features that remain sufficiently stable for separate instances to be classified together. Stability may reside in visual composition, verbal syntax, narrative arrangement, or a repeated relation between these components. The relevant unit is therefore not necessarily identical to the media file that carries it. Two technically unrelated files can instantiate the same meme, while identical files can perform different communicative functions in different contexts.
Variation enters a lineage through copying error, intentional revision, or migration between media. Digital reproduction permits exact duplication at the level of data, but social reproduction still changes interpretation. A file copied without alteration can acquire a new meaning when placed beside a different caption or introduced into another community. Conversely, a heavily modified object can remain part of the same lineage when its identifying relation to earlier versions remains legible.
Memes often depend on intertextuality, because their interpretation presupposes familiarity with earlier media or public events. This dependence creates uneven accessibility. Participants who recognize the relevant reference can infer meanings that are absent from the literal content, while other viewers encounter an incomplete communicative object. The boundary of the interpretive community consequently becomes part of the meme’s social structure.
Transmission and selection
Meme circulation results from repeated decisions by individuals operating within technological and institutional environments. A recipient may reproduce an item because it conveys affiliation, comments on an event, or supports interaction with a particular audience. These motives need not be preserved in later copies. A lineage can continue after its original context has disappeared, provided that subsequent participants assign it a transmissible function.
Selection among variants occurs when some forms receive more replication than others. Simplicity can reduce the effort required for adaptation, while recognizable structure can maintain continuity across substantial modifications. Emotional response can increase immediate sharing, although long-term persistence also depends on whether a form remains usable after its initial context changes. Platform design further alters selection by rewarding measurable engagement and by limiting the visibility of material that does not fit prevailing formats.
The relationship between popularity and longevity is not direct. Rapid diffusion can exhaust the available audience or bind a meme closely to a temporary event. Slower transmission can sustain a lineage within a specialized community over a longer period. Measures of replication must therefore distinguish short-lived exposure from durable incorporation into collective memory.
Social function
Memes operate as compressed forms of public communication. Their recognizable structure allows participants to convey an interpretation without restating its entire background. This economy depends on shared knowledge and can reinforce distinctions between participants who understand the reference and those who do not.
Political communication uses memes to frame individuals and events through familiar cultural forms. Commercial communication adopts similar techniques when organizations reproduce styles developed in informal communities. Institutional participation can alter a meme’s interpretation because audiences evaluate not only the content of a variant but also the social position of its publisher.
Authorship is frequently distributed across a lineage. A person may create an early instance without producing the template by which later versions are recognized, while another participant may introduce the modification that enables large-scale circulation. Attribution becomes further complicated when reposting removes contextual information. Legal ownership under copyright can therefore remain attached to an underlying work even when the meme’s socially significant form results from cumulative transformation.
Scientific status
The meme concept provides a vocabulary for examining recurrence, variation, and selective transmission in culture. Its explanatory scope depends on how precisely the unit of analysis is defined. When a lineage has observable variants and documented paths of circulation, memetic terminology can summarize measurable relationships among them. When the term is applied to an entire belief system without specifying its transmitted components, it functions primarily as a metaphor.
Research on Internet memes commonly draws on network science, media studies, and computational social science. Network analysis identifies routes of diffusion, while content analysis traces changes in form and meaning. These methods generally treat transmission as an interaction among human interpretation, social organization, and technical infrastructure rather than as an autonomous process performed by informational objects.
The meme accordingly occupies two related conceptual roles. In cultural evolution, it denotes a proposed unit or pattern of socially reproduced information. In digital culture, it denotes a recognizable family of media variants whose circulation is integral to their identity. Both usages concern replicated cultural form, although they differ in scale, method, and historical context.
