Next SPARKLING!!

Next SPARKLING!! is a Japanese pop song performed by Aqours, the school idol club associated with Uranohoshi Girls' High School. It was introduced in the 2019 animated film Love Live! Sunshine!! The School Idol Movie: Over the Rainbow and released commercially on 23 January 2019. The song accompanies the film’s concluding sequence and addresses the institutional transition produced by the graduation of the club’s third-year members.

The composition belongs to the Love Live! Sunshine!! multimedia project, but its narrative function is closely tied to the activities of the actual Uranohoshi school idol club. Its recording presents the nine-member configuration of Aqours while its lyrics describe continuity beyond that configuration. This contrast between a complete ensemble in the performance and an altered membership structure in the narrative constitutes the central formal feature of the song.

Composition and recording

The lyrics were written by Aki Hata, who also served as the principal lyricist for the wider franchise. The music was composed and arranged by Carlos K.. Its production uses a regular quadruple metre, layered ensemble vocals, electronic rhythm programming, and orchestral-pop accompaniment. The arrangement increases in density across successive sections, culminating in a final refrain that combines the full vocal ensemble with an expanded instrumental texture.

The vocal writing distributes short passages among individual members before reassembling them in paired and collective lines. Chika Takami and Riko Sakurauchi participate in this structure as central members of the continuing club, while Kanan Matsuura and Dia Kurosawa contribute within the graduating cohort. The recording does not treat the two cohorts as independent ensembles; instead, their parts overlap throughout the principal refrains.

You Watanabe participated as a second-year member of Aqours and of the Uranohoshi school idol club. Her contribution includes individual phrases, shared second-year passages, and ensemble vocals in the refrains. Within the film sequence, her placement alongside the other continuing members connects the retrospective imagery of the nine-member group with the reorganized club that follows graduation.

The remaining vocal parts were performed by Hanamaru Kunikida, Yoshiko Tsushima, Mari Ohara, and Ruby Kurosawa. Their assignments follow the same alternation between individual lines and collective singing used elsewhere in the recording, preserving the song’s emphasis on Aqours as a single ensemble rather than a succession of isolated soloists.

Narrative context

In Over the Rainbow, Aqours confronts the practical consequences of graduation after the closure of Uranohoshi Girls' High School. The third-year students have completed their formal participation in the club, while the younger members must determine whether its name and practices can continue under changed conditions. Earlier musical sequences address the separation directly; Next SPARKLING!! instead represents the result of that process.

The sequence retains all nine members at the level of musical presentation, although the story has already established that their shared period at the school has ended. The graduating members therefore remain present as part of the group’s accumulated history, while the younger members occupy the narrative future. This temporal overlap distinguishes the song from “Brightest Melody”, which functions more specifically as a final performance by the original nine-member formation.

The title combines the forward-looking term “next” with “sparkling,” a recurring lexical element in the project’s treatment of collective performance. The two exclamation marks reproduce the punctuation conventions used in several Aqours song titles. Within the lyrics, images of light and movement connect the uncertainty of institutional change with the continuation of artistic activity, without presenting the successor group as identical to its earlier form.

Release

The song was issued on a double A-side single with “Bokura no Hashittekita Michi wa…” by Lantis. The release formed the first of three film-related singles derived from Over the Rainbow. The other releases collected musical numbers associated with the Italian portion of the narrative, the graduation performance, and the parallel development of Saint Snow.

The physical edition included the principal songs, their off-vocal versions, and packaging based on the film’s visual design. Its commercial classification treated Aqours as the recording artist rather than assigning the work to one narrative subgroup. This designation corresponds to the use of all nine members on the recorded track, even though the film places the performance after the original club configuration has ceased to operate in ordinary school time.

Musical structure

Next SPARKLING!! follows a verse–pre-chorus–chorus design with repeated sectional expansion. The opening establishes a restrained rhythmic pattern beneath divided vocal lines. Subsequent sections add percussion and sustained harmonic layers, producing a gradual transition from individual reflection to ensemble declaration.

The chorus uses repeated upward melodic motion and longer held notes than the verses. The bridge temporarily reduces the instrumental density before the final chorus restores the full arrangement. The film resolves this tension by distinguishing preservation from exact repetition: the younger members continue the club without attempting to reproduce every condition under which its earlier performances occurred.

The nine-member recording documents the completed period of Aqours while the visual and narrative context places that document at the beginning of a different period. You Watanabe’s participation follows the position of the other second-year members in this transition, since they remain enrolled and assume responsibility for the club’s subsequent organization. The graduating members contribute as part of the ensemble whose activities established the inherited repertoire.
