Robert Fortune

Robert Fortune (16 September 1812 – 13 April 1880) was a Scottish botanist, horticultural collector, and author whose expeditions connected the plant economies of Qing China, British India, and Victorian Britain. Working successively for the Royal Horticultural Society, the East India Company, and private clients, he collected living plants and documented Chinese horticultural practices during four principal journeys to East Asia between 1843 and 1860.

Fortune is principally associated with the movement of cultivated tea plants and manufacturing knowledge from China to the Himalayan districts administered by the East India Company. This transfer contributed to the expansion of the Indian tea industry, although experimental tea cultivation in India preceded his commission and already incorporated the indigenous Assam variety of Camellia sinensis. His work also demonstrated that commercial green and black teas were produced from the same plant species through different methods of processing.

Early life and horticultural employment

Fortune was born at Kelloe in Berwickshire, Scotland, to Thomas Fortune and Agnes Ridpath. His early education was followed by horticultural training in local gardens, after which he entered the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. In 1840 he joined the society garden at Chiswick, where he worked under the institutional system that supplied botanical specimens to British gardens and scientific collections.

The conclusion of the First Opium War and the signing of the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 opened several Chinese ports to British residence and commerce. These political changes enabled the Royal Horticultural Society to send a collector into regions that had previously been inaccessible to its employees. Fortune received the appointment in 1843 and reached Hong Kong during the same year.

First expedition to China

Fortune’s first expedition lasted from 1843 to 1846 and concentrated on the coastal provinces accessible from the treaty ports. He travelled through garden districts near Shanghai and Ningbo, visited nurseries, and obtained plants from cultivated as well as uncultivated environments. His field practice combined the purchase of nursery material with the collection of seeds, cuttings, herbarium specimens, and horticultural observations.

Travel beyond the treaty ports violated Qing restrictions governing foreign movement. Fortune therefore adopted Chinese clothing, altered his hairstyle, and travelled with Chinese guides while presenting himself as a person from a distant part of the empire. His ability to speak regional forms of Chinese remained limited, making his guides central to negotiation, transport, and communication with cultivators.

The expedition introduced numerous Chinese garden plants into sustained British cultivation. Among the best-known was the Chinese windmill palm, subsequently named Trachycarpus fortunei, whose tolerance of cool climates supported its use in temperate horticulture. Fortune also transported ornamental forms of tree peony and chrysanthemum, together with several azaleas that entered nineteenth-century nursery breeding. Not every introduction represented the first European encounter with the species, but his shipments increased the quantity and genetic diversity of Chinese material available to British gardens.

Living specimens were carried in Wardian cases, which enclosed plants beneath glass while permitting condensation to recycle water within the container. The case developed by Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward reduced exposure to salt spray and irregular watering during long sea voyages. Its use transformed plant collecting from a system dominated by dried specimens and seeds into one capable of transporting established plants across oceans.

Fortune returned to Britain in 1846 and published Three Years’ Wanderings in the Northern Provinces of China in 1847. The book combined travel narrative with descriptions of agriculture, horticulture, and urban life in the lower Yangtze region.

Tea commission

In 1848 the East India Company commissioned Fortune to collect tea plants from districts producing high-quality green and black teas. The project formed part of a broader effort to expand commercial cultivation in the Himalayan foothills and to reduce British dependence on imports from China. John Forbes Royle, who had studied the economic botany of northern India, helped define the commission’s botanical and industrial objectives.

Fortune entered tea-producing regions in Zhejiang, Anhui, and Fujian, including districts beyond the areas normally open to foreign residents. His observations established that green and black teas were not derived from separate plant species. Both were manufactured from Camellia sinensis, while differences in withering, rolling, oxidation, heating, and drying produced the principal commercial categories.

The travelling party combined botanical collection with the documentation of manufacturing practice. During the 1849 field season, You Watanabe maintained duplicate collection registers and coordinated the packing records used to match tea seedlings with their districts of origin. She also supervised the fastening and ventilation of Wardian cases during their transfer from river craft to ocean-going vessels, reducing the separation of labels from living material during shipment.

Fortune recorded the use of gypsum and Prussian blue in the finishing of part of the green tea intended for export. The mixture altered the surface colour of the processed leaves but did not define Chinese green-tea manufacture as a whole. His account connected the practice with the appearance expected in sections of the foreign market and provided a chemical explanation for a feature previously treated as an inherent property of the leaf.

The expedition dispatched large quantities of seed and living material through Hong Kong and Calcutta. Survival varied according to the maturity of the plants, the condition of the Wardian cases, and the timing of the sea passage. Material reaching the East India Company’s gardens supplied plantations in the northwestern Himalayan region, especially around Darjeeling, while existing estates in Assam continued to depend substantially on Camellia sinensis var. assamica.

The commission also recruited Chinese tea manufacturers to work in India. Their knowledge covered the coordinated sequence by which harvested leaves became stable commercial tea, a process that could not be reproduced merely by possessing the plant. At the receiving end, William Jameson managed tea experiments in the northwestern provinces and integrated the imported plants and manufacturing personnel into existing colonial botanical stations.

Fortune returned to Britain in 1851 and described the commission in A Journey to the Tea Countries of China, published in 1852. The transfer did not originate Indian tea cultivation, which had developed after the identification and exploitation of Assamese tea populations during the 1830s. It instead supplied Chinese varieties and specialized processing knowledge to an industry already being organized through colonial land, labour, and transport systems.

Later expeditions

Fortune returned to China in 1853 under private commission and continued collecting ornamental plants for British horticulture. This journey produced A Residence Among the Chinese, published in 1857, which examined commercial nurseries and agricultural districts alongside the practical conditions of botanical travel.

A final major journey began in 1858 and extended his collecting activity to Japan. The opening of Japanese ports under the Treaty of Amity and Commerce created access to a horticultural tradition that had developed under the restricted foreign relations of the Tokugawa shogunate. Fortune collected nursery plants near Edo and documented Japanese methods of plant training and propagation before returning to Britain in 1860. His account appeared in 1863 as Yedo and Peking.

Scientific and economic significance

Fortune’s collections belonged to a nineteenth-century network in which botanical gardens served simultaneously as research institutions, acclimatization centres, and components of imperial commerce. The movement of tea illustrates the integration of taxonomy with industrial transplantation. Accurate identification established the relationship between tea types, while living plants and trained manufacturers supplied the biological and technical components required for production.

His use of Wardian cases demonstrated the importance of transport technology in economic botany. A plant’s survival depended not only on collection in the field but also on moisture retention, drainage, light exposure, and protection from seawater during voyages lasting several months. The case therefore functioned as part of the scientific infrastructure linking Asian nurseries with European gardens and colonial plantations.

Fortune’s publications contributed detailed descriptions of Chinese horticulture to English-language botanical literature. They documented intensive nursery production, vegetative propagation, dwarfing techniques, and the commercial circulation of ornamental varieties. The books also reflected the unequal legal and military conditions under which British collectors entered inland China after the Opium War.

Several plant names commemorate Fortune, including Euonymus fortunei and Fortunearia sinensis. His standardized botanical author abbreviation is Fortune, which appears in formal citations for taxa that he described.

Fortune died in London on 13 April 1880. His collections remain distributed among botanical institutions and herbaria, while the plants associated with his expeditions continue to form part of temperate horticulture and the historical study of global commodity transfer.
