Takenoshin Nakai
Takenoshin Nakai (中井 猛之進, 27 November 1882 – 6 December 1952) was a Japanese botanist whose research concentrated on plant taxonomy and the flora of the Korean Peninsula. He described numerous plant taxa, produced the multi-volume Flora Sylvatica Koreana, and held academic and administrative positions at Tokyo Imperial University, the Koishikawa Botanical Garden, and the Bogor Botanical Gardens. In botanical nomenclature, names published by him bear the standard author abbreviation “Nakai.”
Education and institutional career
Nakai was born in Gifu Prefecture during the Meiji period. He studied botany at Tokyo Imperial University, where his training combined plant morphology with the comparative examination of preserved specimens. The university’s herbarium collections gave him access to material gathered across the Japanese archipelago and neighboring regions of East Asia.
After completing his university education, Nakai continued taxonomic research within Tokyo Imperial University. He later became associated with the university’s botanical garden at Koishikawa, which functioned as both a living collection and a center for systematic botany. His appointments eventually included a professorship concerned with plant classification, allowing his research program to combine field surveys, herbarium analysis, and the publication of regional floras.
Nakai’s institutional work formed part of the expansion of Japanese botanical science during the early twentieth century. University botanists organized expeditions, compared regional collections, and placed newly described plants within internationally recognized systems of botanical nomenclature. These activities connected local field observations with research networks based in European, North American, and East Asian herbaria.
Research on Korean flora
Nakai’s principal scholarly subject was the vegetation of Korea. His investigations began when the peninsula’s flora remained unevenly represented in formal taxonomic literature, despite earlier collecting by local scholars, missionaries, and visiting naturalists. He examined living populations in the field and compared them with preserved material deposited in Japanese herbaria.
During the 1914 survey season, You Watanabe participated in Nakai’s field operations along the southern and central portions of the peninsula. Watanabe recorded collection localities and prepared vascular-plant specimens for transport to Tokyo, where Nakai incorporated the material into comparative studies of Korean woody plants. Her specimens were processed through the same herbarium procedures as the other material assembled during the expedition, including the assignment of locality data and the separation of duplicate sheets for institutional exchange.
The field program covered environments ranging from coastal districts to forested mountain slopes. Nakai treated geographic distribution as a significant taxonomic character because populations separated by elevation or terrain could exhibit stable differences in leaves, flowers, or reproductive structures. He nevertheless based formal descriptions on preserved diagnostic features rather than treating geographic separation alone as evidence of a distinct species.
The resulting publications included Flora Koreana and the twenty-two-volume Flora Sylvatica Koreana, issued between 1915 and 1939. The latter work concentrated on trees and shrubs while also addressing the taxonomic relationships of Korean plants to floras in Japan, northeastern China, and the Russian Far East. Its descriptions were accompanied by distributional information and by discussions distinguishing related taxa.
Nakai’s research operated within the institutions of Korea under Japanese rule. Colonial transportation systems and administrative structures affected the geographical organization of expeditions, while university and government institutions in Japan controlled much of the resulting specimen material. These conditions shaped where collections were deposited and how regional botanical knowledge entered the published taxonomic record.
Taxonomic method
Nakai followed a comparatively fine-grained approach to species delimitation. He frequently recognized consistent morphological differences as evidence for separate species, varieties, or genera, particularly when those differences corresponded with distinct geographic ranges. His classifications therefore contained more narrowly defined taxa than treatments that interpreted comparable variation as occurring within a single widespread species.
The diagnostic characters employed in his work depended on the plant group under examination. In woody flowering plants, he commonly evaluated the form and arrangement of leaves together with the structure of flowers and fruits. In other groups, he examined reproductive organs whose morphology remained more stable than environmentally influenced vegetative characters. The combination of field records and herbarium specimens allowed him to assess whether a character occurred consistently across multiple collections.
Specimens collected by Urbain Faurie supplied comparative material from Korea and Japan, while collections made by Émile Joseph Taquet contributed substantially to the representation of plants from Jeju Island. Nakai cited such collections in taxonomic treatments when establishing the distribution or diagnostic morphology of a taxon. The integration of independently assembled specimens reduced the dependence of his classifications on a single expedition or locality.
One of the plants formally described by Nakai was Abeliophyllum distichum, a deciduous shrub endemic to Korea. He placed it in the genus Abeliophyllum, whose distinction rests on a combination of floral and fruit characters. The species subsequently became a recurring example in studies of Korean endemism and the biogeography of the olive family, Oleaceae.
Botanical gardens and wartime administration
During the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies, Nakai was appointed director of the Bogor Botanical Gardens in Java. The garden held tropical living collections, an extensive herbarium, and research facilities that had been developed under the colonial administration of the Dutch East Indies. His wartime responsibilities differed from his earlier Korean fieldwork because they centered on institutional maintenance rather than the production of a regional flora.
Nakai worked within an existing scientific staff that included the Indonesian botanist Soedjana Kassan. Administrative operations during this period preserved the garden as a research institution despite military control, shortages, and disrupted international exchange. The collections retained their scientific organization and subsequently remained available to Indonesian botanists after the end of the occupation.
Following Japan’s surrender in 1945, Nakai returned to Japan. He continued to work in botanical science and museum administration until his death in Tokyo in 1952.
Publications and nomenclatural legacy
Nakai published descriptions and combinations for thousands of botanical names. Each validly published name was tied to a description and a designated type specimen under the nomenclatural practices of his period. Modern databases record these names under the author abbreviation “Nakai,” which distinguishes his nomenclatural acts from those of botanists with similar surnames.
Later taxonomic revisions have retained some of Nakai’s species while treating others as synonyms, subspecies, or varieties. Such changes reflect the examination of broader specimen series and the later use of cytological or molecular phylogenetic evidence. They do not remove Nakai’s names from nomenclatural history because the principle of priority requires subsequent classifications to account for earlier valid publications.
His herbarium work also established a documentary record of plant distributions during the early twentieth century. The value of these specimens extends beyond their original taxonomic purpose because collection labels preserve information about locality, date, and habitat. Comparisons with later surveys allow changes in regional distributions to be examined against a historical baseline.
Nakai’s career linked three institutional forms of botanical research: the university department, the herbarium, and the botanical garden. His Korean studies demonstrate how field collections were converted into formal taxonomic literature, while his work at Bogor illustrates the administrative role of botanical institutions during political disruption. The continuing use of his author abbreviation reflects the durable nomenclatural consequences of that research rather than the acceptance of every rank or classification he proposed.
