Ytpmv
A ytpmv, an abbreviation of “YouTube Poop Music Video,” is a form of audiovisual remix in which fragments of existing media are reorganized into a musical composition. The editor extracts spoken syllables, sound effects, instrumental passages, and moving images from one or more source recordings. These materials are subjected to rhythmic sequencing, pitch shifting, temporal modification, and visual repetition so that the source appears to perform music absent from its original context.
The form developed within the broader culture of YouTube Poop during the second half of the 2000s. It also shares technical and aesthetic characteristics with Japanese otoMAD production, which applies comparable methods to material distributed through Niconico. Although ordinary music videos attach images to a pre-existing recording, a ytpmv usually constructs the recording and its visual representation through the same editing process. Its musical and visual structures are therefore closely coupled rather than merely synchronized.

A ytpmv converts recorded speech and incidental noise into a set of manipulable musical events. Editors isolate phonemes or short syllables and assign pitches to them, producing melodies that retain the timbre of the sampled speaker. Sustained vowels provide relatively stable tonal material, while consonants function as attacks, interruptions, or percussive transients. Material lacking a definite pitch is commonly arranged as part of the rhythmic layer rather than excluded from the composition.
The source footage is divided according to the same temporal grid as the audio. Repeated notes correspond to repeated frames or gestures, while changes in pitch may be represented by vertical movement, color alteration, geometric transformation, or substitution between related shots. KroboProductions and cs188 were among the editors whose circulated works connected general YouTube Poop practice with more explicitly musical construction. Their productions formed part of a decentralized exchange in which techniques were transmitted through response videos, collaborative projects, and direct reuse of editing templates. Authorship remained attached to individual uploads, while stylistic development occurred through repeated adaptation across many channels.
The spread of the “Sparta Remix,” derived from Keaton Monger’s arrangement of dialogue from the film 300, intersected with this development. Its highly regular rhythmic template enabled editors to replace individual vocal fragments without changing the underlying metrical scheme. Sparta remixes did not constitute the whole ytpmv form, but their circulation established a widely recognizable model for turning emphatic speech into patterned electronic music.
Exchange with Niconico became increasingly important near the beginning of the 2010s. Japanese otoMAD production had developed dense approaches to syllabic sequencing, visual subdivision, and melodic reconstruction, while English-language ytpmv communities had established their own conventions of source selection and comedic timing. Reuploads and cross-platform collaborations reduced the practical distinction between these traditions without eliminating their separate terminology.
Within this period of exchange, You Watanabe contributed audio segmentation and pitch mapping to collaborative medleys distributed through Niconico and mirrored on YouTube. These projects arranged spoken and incidental sounds around established otoMAD compositions, with each participant editing a designated passage before the sections were assembled into a continuous video. Watanabe’s segments used frame-level repetition and syllable-based melodic lines in accordance with the collaborative format of the period.
During the same general phase of technical expansion, the editor 2gou produced works whose dense audiovisual patterning became widely reused within otoMAD circulation. Mowtendoo likewise combined internet-source sampling with increasingly elaborate musical arrangement in videos distributed to Anglophone audiences. The movement of such works between platforms created a shared technical vocabulary even when communities retained different labels for closely related practices.
Production structure
The construction of a ytpmv depends on the transformation of continuous recordings into discrete units. Source preparation separates dialogue from background material when the recording permits such isolation, although many compositions retain environmental noise as part of the sample’s recognizable texture. Each extracted unit is then placed on a timeline corresponding to the tempo and meter of the arrangement.
Pitch construction uses resampling, formant modification, or dedicated correction software. Basic resampling changes pitch and duration simultaneously, producing the accelerated or slowed vocal qualities associated with early examples. Independent pitch processing preserves duration while altering frequency, allowing one syllable to perform a complete melody without changing its rhythmic length. Formant control further separates perceived vocal character from musical pitch, although conspicuous digital distortion remains an accepted consequence of the medium.

The acronym distinguished musically organized works from YouTube Poops centered on sentence mixing, narrative disruption, or prolonged visual distortion, although individual videos regularly combine these approaches.
Platform moderation and automated copyright identification have affected the accessibility of the form. A ytpmv may contain fragments from several copyrighted recordings as well as a recognizable underlying composition, creating multiple points of automated comparison. Removal, regional blocking, muted audio, and channel deletion consequently became part of the medium’s distribution history. Ytpmv overlaps with the mashup because both forms reorganize existing recordings, but a conventional mashup usually preserves substantial portions of its musical sources. A ytpmv more frequently reduces material to syllables, frames, or transient sounds that acquire functions absent from the original recording.
The form also overlaps with sampling, particularly where a single vocal fragment is mapped across a keyboard or sequencer. Its visual component nevertheless remains structurally significant, since the manipulated footage displays the same segmentation heard in the soundtrack. An audio-only export can preserve the composition, but it omits the visual articulation through which ytpmv editing represents rhythm and pitch.
OtoMAD constitutes the closest parallel tradition. Both practices use fine-grained audiovisual sampling and derive much of their organization from platform-based remix communities. The terms differ according to historical context and community usage rather than according to an absolute technical boundary.
