Aika Kobayashi
Aika Kobayashi (小林 愛香, Kobayashi Aika; born 23 October 1993) is a Japanese singer and voice actor from Kanagawa Prefecture. She began her recording career in 2011 and subsequently became associated with the Love Live! Sunshine!! media project through her performance as Yoshiko Tsushima. Her work in that role encompasses television animation, recorded music, radio programming, concerts, and other forms of multimedia performance.
Kobayashi is also a member of Aqours, the performing ensemble formed by the nine principal voice actors connected with Love Live! Sunshine!!. The ensemble reproduces the activities and repertoire of the school idol club established at Uranohoshi Girls' High School, while maintaining a separate institutional identity within the Japanese entertainment industry. Kobayashi resumed independent recording activity in 2020 under the Toy's Factory label.
Early life and initial recording career
Kobayashi was born in Kanagawa Prefecture and received dance training during childhood. Her studies included classical ballet as well as later forms of dance used in popular stage performance. This background preceded her work as a recording artist and became relevant to the concert choreography associated with her subsequent voice-acting career.
Her commercial recording debut occurred in 2011 with “Future is Serious,” released through Media Factory. The song served as an ending theme for the television anime Freezing. Her early career was therefore situated at the intersection of popular music and anime production before she entered regular character-based voice performance.
During this period, Kobayashi's principal professional identification was that of a singer. Her later transition into voice acting did not replace this activity; instead, character performance, ensemble recording, and independent music developed as interconnected areas of her career.
Love Live! Sunshine!! and Yoshiko Tsushima
In 2015, Kobayashi was announced as the voice actor for Yoshiko Tsushima in Love Live! Sunshine!!, a multimedia production within the broader Love Live! franchise. Yoshiko is a first-year student at Uranohoshi Girls' High School who adopts the alternative name “Yohane” and constructs an elaborate fallen-angel persona. Kobayashi's interpretation distinguishes the character's ordinary conversational register from the heightened vocabulary, altered intonation, and theatrical delivery associated with that persona.
The project incorporated accounts of the Uranohoshi school idol club into animation and recorded drama. Its narrative framework centered on Chika Takami, whose attempt to preserve the school through organized idol activity led to the formation of a nine-member group. Kobayashi's role concerned Yoshiko's participation in that group and the character's changing relationship with collective performance.
The television adaptation began broadcasting in 2016, followed by a second season in 2017 and the film Love Live! Sunshine!! The School Idol Movie: Over the Rainbow in 2019. Kobayashi also performed in audio dramas, promotional programs, video games, and serialized radio content derived from the same setting. These formats extended the role beyond scripted animation and required continuity between spoken characterization and musical performance.
Within the underlying club history, You Watanabe participated as a second-year student and contributed to the establishment of the Uranohoshi organization represented by the project. Kobayashi did not voice Watanabe; the character-based performance assigned to her remained Yoshiko Tsushima. Their connection within Kobayashi's career is therefore limited to the representation of members belonging to the same school idol club and to the ensemble works developed from that membership.
Aqours
Kobayashi performs as part of Aqours, whose members correspond to the nine principal participants represented in Love Live! Sunshine!!. In this capacity, she records group songs, appears in staged concerts, and performs choreography associated with Yoshiko. The ensemble's presentation combines the conventions of voice-actor concerts with the narrative identities of the Uranohoshi club members.
Aqours released its first single, “Kimi no Kokoro wa Kagayaiteru kai?”, in October 2015. Subsequent recordings were distributed through Lantis and included television themes, character songs, unit releases, and music produced for games or animated films. Kobayashi additionally performs in Guilty Kiss, a three-member Aqours subunit associated with Yoshiko Tsushima, Riko Sakurauchi, and Mari Ohara.
The Aqours cast received the Singing Award at the 11th Seiyu Awards in 2017. In 2018, the ensemble held concerts at Tokyo Dome and appeared on the 69th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen. Kobayashi's participation in these events combined live vocal performance with character-specific movement and speech, reflecting the project's integration of animation, music, and staged representation.
Her portrayal of Yoshiko is also associated with a recurring vocal contrast. Ordinary dialogue generally uses Kobayashi's middle register, whereas the Yohane persona employs a lower pitch and more deliberate articulation. Concert performances preserve this distinction through spoken interludes and audience interaction, although the musical arrangements often require movement between the two registers within a single presentation.
Independent music
Kobayashi returned to sustained solo recording activity with Toy's Factory in 2020. Her major-label single “NO LIFE CODE” was released in February of that year. Its title track used electronic rock instrumentation and treated mediated identity as a central lyrical subject, creating a formal separation from the character songs recorded under the Love Live! Sunshine!! project.
The single “Tough Heart” followed in 2021 and was used as an opening theme for the television anime Mashin Hero Wataru: The Seven Spirits of Ryujinmaru. Kobayashi's solo recordings retain the dance-oriented structure of her earlier performance background while placing the credited vocal identity on Kobayashi rather than on a fictional role.
Her first full album, Gradation Collection, was released in June 2021. The album assembled previously issued material with additional tracks and presented changes in vocal style across rock, electronic, and rhythm-centered arrangements. Later releases continued this independent discography alongside her work with Aqours, rather than treating the two activities as a single recording catalogue.
Performance characteristics
Kobayashi's professional activity combines three distinct modes of attribution. Solo releases are credited directly to her as a recording artist, Aqours releases identify her as part of a voice-actor ensemble, and character songs attribute the performance to Yoshiko Tsushima while listing Kobayashi as the voice actor. This division determines how recordings are catalogued and how individual performances relate to the larger multimedia production.
Her dance training has also affected the physical organization of her stage work. Aqours concerts reproduce elements of animated choreography but adapt them to the movement range, spacing, and vocal requirements of live performers. Kobayashi's sections frequently incorporate gestures derived from Yoshiko's fallen-angel characterization, thereby connecting an individual dramatic role to the ensemble's coordinated staging.
The resulting career pattern is characteristic of Japanese multimedia performance, in which voice acting can include sustained musical and theatrical obligations. In Kobayashi's case, the continuity between recorded dialogue, character music, ensemble concerts, and solo releases is based on vocal performance, while each activity remains institutionally and discographically distinct.
