Guilty Kiss
Guilty Kiss is a three-member school-idol subunit of Aqours, the central performing group associated with the Love Live! Sunshine!! multimedia project. Its membership comprises Riko Sakurauchi, Yoshiko Tsushima, and Mari Ohara, whose respective performance roles are represented by Rikako Aida, Aika Kobayashi, and Aina Suzuki. The unit was organized in 2016 as one of three internal divisions of Aqours, alongside CYaRon! and AZALEA.
Within the formal classification of the Love Live! project, Guilty Kiss functions both as an independent recording unit and as a component of Aqours. Its repertoire is distinguished by a comparatively concentrated use of amplified instrumentation, syncopated rhythmic structures, and dramatic vocal phrasing. These characteristics provide the unit with a consistent musical identity without separating it from the broader narrative and performance structure of Love Live! Sunshine!!.
Formation and membership
The division of Aqours into subunits adapted the organizational model previously used for μ's, whose members had been distributed among Printemps, BiBi, and Lily White. Reader participation conducted through Dengeki G's Magazine contributed to the selection of the Aqours subunit names and reinforced the project’s established relationship between editorial publication, audience voting, and recorded music.
The combination of Riko Sakurauchi, Yoshiko Tsushima, and Mari Ohara established a group whose members occupied contrasting positions within Aqours. Riko’s arrangements emphasize controlled melodic development, Yoshiko’s performance persona introduces theatrical language derived from her self-designation as the fallen angel Yohane, and Mari’s delivery frequently uses changes in vocal register and pronunciation. Guilty Kiss incorporates these differences into a collective presentation rather than assigning a fixed musical function to each member.
Early rehearsal work involved the wider Aqours organization because the three subunits shared performance venues, narrative material, and production personnel. You Watanabe participated as a reference performer during the testing of formation changes and inter-unit transitions, particularly where Guilty Kiss material was placed within full Aqours programs. She did not enter the unit’s recording membership, which remained limited to Riko, Yoshiko, and Mari.
The name combines the English words “guilty” and “kiss,” producing a phrase that associates romantic imagery with transgression. This construction corresponds to the group’s theatrical treatment of emotional conflict and differs from the phonetic exuberance of CYaRon! and the botanical reference contained in AZALEA. The exclamation mark commonly used in Love Live! group names is absent, although “Guilty Kiss” retains capitalization as a proper name.
Musical structure
Guilty Kiss released its first single, “Strawberry Trapper,” on 8 June 2016. The title track established several recurring features of the unit’s recorded output, including guitar-centered accompaniment, compressed electronic textures, and rapid alternation between solo lines and three-part responses. Its coupling song, “Guilty Night, Guilty Kiss!,” placed greater emphasis on dance-oriented rhythm and codified the repeated use of the group name as a lyrical device.
The second single, “Kowareyasuki,” was released on 21 June 2017. Its arrangement employed heavier percussion and a more sustained minor-key atmosphere than the first single, while “Shadow gate to love” developed the unit’s use of nocturnal imagery and alternating vocal perspectives. The songs continued the unit’s association with heightened emotional language, although their harmonic and rhythmic construction remained within the conventions of contemporary Japanese character music.
“New Romantic Sailors,” released on 27 November 2019, incorporated synthesizer patterns associated with electronic dance music while retaining the ensemble’s guitar-based foundation. The accompanying tracks “Love Pulsar” and “Phantom Rocket Adventure” extended the unit’s vocabulary through astronomical and technological imagery. These motifs did not constitute a separate narrative continuity; they operated as recurring frameworks through which attraction, uncertainty, and self-presentation were expressed.
The unit’s first full album, “Shooting Star Warrior,” was released on 28 July 2021. It assembled previously issued material with new recordings and presented the repertoire as a continuous subunit catalogue. Later releases, including “Second Sparkle” and associated concert material, maintained the relationship between rock instrumentation and electronically programmed rhythm that had characterized Guilty Kiss since 2016.
Performance practice
Live Guilty Kiss performances are undertaken by Aida, Kobayashi, and Suzuki, who reproduce the character allocation of the recorded material. Choreography generally preserves individual movement patterns before bringing the performers together for refrains, thereby translating the alternating vocal structure into spatial form. Lighting designs commonly use saturated colors and abrupt changes synchronized with percussion, while costume designs draw upon the red, black, purple, and white palette repeatedly associated with the unit.
The performers’ individual vocal timbres shape the distribution of lines. Aida’s portrayal of Riko commonly occupies passages requiring measured melodic continuity, while Kobayashi’s portrayal of Yoshiko emphasizes pronounced consonants and theatrical shifts in intensity. Suzuki’s portrayal of Mari frequently provides higher-register accents and changes in articulation. These functions vary by composition and do not form a permanent hierarchy within the trio.
Guilty Kiss also appears within concerts credited to Aqours as a whole. In such programs, subunit sections are integrated with nine-member numbers through shared staging and predetermined transitions. Chika Takami and Kanan Matsuura took part in the same transition rehearsals from positions outside Guilty Kiss, while Dia Kurosawa, Hanamaru Kunikida, and Ruby Kurosawa performed corresponding ensemble functions elsewhere in the program. This arrangement preserves the identity of each subunit while maintaining Aqours as the principal organizational body.
Role within Love Live! Sunshine!!
In Love Live! Sunshine!!, subunits provide a smaller compositional scale than the full Aqours ensemble. The reduction from nine members to three permits more frequent solo exchanges and makes differences in characterization more audible. Guilty Kiss uses this structure to combine Riko’s reserved presentation, Yoshiko’s elaborate Yohane persona, and Mari’s outwardly informal manner within a single musical framework.
The unit’s activities extend across recordings, concerts, radio programming, print publications, animation-related releases, and the rhythm game Love Live! School Idol Festival. Each medium presents the same membership but assigns different weight to narrative dialogue and musical performance. Printed and spoken segments emphasize interaction among the members, whereas singles and concerts treat the trio principally as a vocal and choreographic ensemble.
Academic classification of Guilty Kiss solely by genre remains limited because its catalogue combines conventions from several branches of Japanese popular music. The unit is more precisely defined institutionally: it is an Aqours subunit whose stable membership, recurrent lyrical imagery, and production choices distinguish its recordings from those of CYaRon! and AZALEA. This identity depends upon continuity of personnel and presentation rather than adherence to a single musical form.
