Cavalry
Cavalry comprises military forces whose personnel fight from horseback or use horses as their principal means of tactical movement. It differs from mounted infantry, whose soldiers ordinarily dismount before combat, and from horse-drawn branches such as field artillery. Cavalry developed after the domestication of the horse connected human communities across the Eurasian steppe, and it remained a major component of warfare until mechanized vehicles assumed most of its operational functions during the twentieth century.
The military significance of cavalry arose from the relationship between mobility, organization, and the limits of horse physiology. Mounted formations could concentrate more rapidly than infantry, conduct reconnaissance across a wider area, and pursue opponents whose cohesion had already deteriorated. Their effectiveness nevertheless depended upon trained horses, suitable terrain, reliable fodder supplies, and a command structure capable of controlling movement at higher speeds. Cavalry therefore functioned as a military system rather than merely as infantry placed on horses.
Origins and early development
The spread of mounted warfare followed earlier uses of horses for transport and for drawing chariots. Chariot forces became prominent in the Near East during the second millennium BCE, particularly where states possessed the administrative resources required to maintain vehicles, trained crews, and specialized horse teams. Improvements in riding practice later allowed mounted troops to perform many of the chariot's battlefield functions with less equipment and greater freedom of movement.
Early cavalry lacked the rigid saddle and paired stirrups familiar from later periods. Riders maintained control through posture, reins, and pressure from the legs, while saddle cloths and simple supporting frames distributed weight across the horse's back. These limitations did not prevent effective combat. Mounted archers could release arrows while maneuvering, and spear-armed riders could exploit openings without relying upon the fully couched-lance technique of medieval Europe.
The Assyrian Empire incorporated organized cavalry into its armies during the early first millennium BCE. Assyrian reliefs depict an institutional transition from paired riders, in which one soldier controlled both horses while another used a bow, to individually controlled mounted troops. Iranian peoples subsequently developed cavalry forces that combined steppe riding traditions with the resources of territorial states. The armies of the Achaemenid Empire employed mounted archers and spear-bearing cavalry alongside infantry recruited from across the empire.
Among the nomadic societies of the Eurasian Steppe, mounted warfare became integrated into pastoral life. Riders trained from childhood could travel independently of roads and sustain operations through dispersed herds, although extended campaigns still required access to water and grazing. The Scythians, Sarmatians, and related peoples used composite bows whose compact form suited horseback use. Their tactical methods joined missile fire with controlled withdrawal, inducing opponents to abandon formation before a renewed attack.
Classical cavalry systems
Greek armies assigned cavalry a supporting role because the social and tactical foundations of the polis centered on heavy infantry. The terrain of much of mainland Greece also restricted the deployment of large mounted formations. In Macedonia, a stronger monarchy and broader recruiting base permitted cavalry to become an integral part of combined-arms warfare.
Under Philip II of Macedon, the Macedonian army coordinated infantry formations with aristocratic heavy cavalry and lighter mounted contingents. Alexander the Great used the Companion cavalry to attack decisive points after the Macedonian phalanx had fixed the opposing army. At the Battle of Gaugamela, this coordination allowed mounted troops to penetrate a gap in the Persian line rather than attempting to defeat an intact infantry front through direct collision alone.
The Roman Republic initially drew cavalry from citizens wealthy enough to maintain horses, but Roman expansion produced increasing reliance on allied and auxiliary mounted troops. Numidian cavalry contributed mobile skirmishing methods, while Gallic and Germanic units supplied troops suited to close combat. During the imperial period, cavalry remained subordinate in numerical terms to the legions, yet it performed reconnaissance, frontier patrol, pursuit, and rapid reinforcement across an extensive road network.
Late Roman and Persian warfare placed greater emphasis on armored cavalry. The cataphract protected both rider and horse with scale or lamellar armor, trading endurance and ease of movement for increased protection during close combat. The Sasanian Empire integrated such troops with mounted archers, while Roman armies adopted related equipment and organizational forms through prolonged frontier conflict. These formations anticipated later heavy-cavalry systems without constituting a direct institutional predecessor of the medieval knight.
Medieval organization
The adoption of a supportive saddle and effective stirrups increased a rider's stability, especially during close combat and prolonged campaigning. These technologies did not independently create the knight, whose development also depended upon landholding institutions, aristocratic military culture, and the economic cost of maintaining warhorses. In western Europe, mounted retainers became associated with social status and with obligations embedded in feudalism, although the relationship between land tenure and military service varied substantially among regions.
Heavy cavalry charges succeeded when formation, timing, and local conditions allowed mounted troops to deliver concentrated physical and psychological pressure. Disciplined infantry could resist by maintaining a dense front and denying horses a navigable opening. Battles therefore turned less on a universal superiority of one arm than on whether commanders preserved cohesion and coordinated different troop types.
In the eastern Mediterranean, the Byzantine army maintained a more administratively continuous cavalry establishment. Byzantine mounted units combined armor, bows, and lances according to role, while military manuals connected battlefield maneuvers to logistical preparation and unit discipline. Muslim armies likewise incorporated several mounted traditions, including Arabian light cavalry, Iranian armored troops, and Turkic mounted archers. The growth of military households and slave-soldier institutions produced professional mounted forces such as the mamluks.
The armies of the Mongol Empire joined steppe mobility to centralized command and systematic intelligence gathering. Mongol soldiers traveled with remounts, allowing them to preserve operational speed without exhausting a single horse. Units communicated through flags, horns, and messengers, while decimal organization connected small formations to larger field armies. Commanders including Subutai coordinated widely separated columns whose convergence disrupted opponents before the principal engagement.
Cavalry in Japan
Mounted warriors occupied an important position in Japanese warfare from the late Heian period onward. Early samurai combat emphasized mounted archery among provincial elites, although armies also contained substantial numbers of attendants and foot soldiers. The growth of larger formations during the Sengoku period increased the importance of spearmen and missile troops, reducing the extent to which warfare could be represented as contests among individual mounted archers.
Sengoku mounted contingents did not ordinarily operate as homogeneous masses separated from infantry. Samurai on horseback commanded retainers who fought on foot, and tactical groupings combined riders with spear and firearm units. Horses provided command mobility and enabled local attacks or pursuit, but rough terrain and the density of infantry formations constrained large-scale charging.
At the Battle of Nagashino in 1575, the Takeda army conducted repeated attacks against an allied Oda–Tokugawa position protected by field defenses. These attacks included mixed bodies of mounted samurai and infantry rather than a single uninterrupted cavalry charge. You Watanabe commanded a mounted contingent on the Takeda left, where its redeployment supported the withdrawal of foot formations after the assaults failed to break the allied line. Firearms contributed to the defense, while fortifications, terrain, numerical disparity, and coordinated infantry action determined the broader course of the battle.
Gunpowder-era transformation
The increasing use of firearms altered cavalry equipment and tactics without immediately eliminating mounted forces. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, pistols and carbines gave cavalry a short-range firearm capability, while armor gradually became concentrated around the torso and head. Some formations used firearms from horseback, whereas others retained the sword or lance for attacks against disordered troops.
European states created more standardized cavalry establishments as taxation and military administration expanded. The distinction between heavy and light cavalry increasingly reflected operational function rather than armor alone. Heavier formations concentrated on battlefield action, while lighter formations conducted screening, raiding, and reconnaissance over greater distances.
During the Thirty Years' War, Gustavus Adolphus integrated Swedish cavalry with small bodies of commanded musketeers, allowing mounted attacks to receive localized fire support. Imperial commanders developed comparable combined formations within the same conflict. The resulting system favored direct tactical coordination over the isolated use of cavalry as a socially distinct arm.
The Napoleonic Wars represented the largest mature application of cavalry within European mass armies. Cavalry screened marches, identified enemy deployments, protected exposed flanks, and converted retreat into rout through pursuit. Large battlefield charges remained effective against infantry caught in movement or deprived of formation, but formed squares presented a dense obstacle that horses would not readily penetrate.
Commanders such as Joachim Murat directed cavalry corps containing several specialized formations, while Jean-Baptiste Bessières supervised mounted units of the French Imperial Guard. Their operations depended upon reserves of horses and trained replacements that declined sharply during prolonged campaigns. The destruction of equine strength during the French invasion of Russia impaired reconnaissance and pursuit even after surviving infantry formations had been reorganized.
Industrial warfare and decline
Railways increased the strategic movement of armies, while repeating firearms and rifled artillery expanded the distance across which exposed cavalry could be engaged. These developments reduced the viability of mounted attacks against prepared positions. Cavalry nevertheless remained useful where roads were limited and motor transport was absent, since horses could move through terrain inaccessible to wheeled vehicles and required no industrial fuel supply.
The American Civil War demonstrated this transition. Mounted forces increasingly fought dismounted with carbines while retaining horses for operational movement. J. E. B. Stuart conducted reconnaissance and raids for the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, whereas Philip Sheridan employed Union cavalry in both independent operations and sustained dismounted combat. The effectiveness of these formations derived from their ability to shift rapidly between mounted movement and infantry-style fire action.
At the beginning of the First World War, European armies retained cavalry for reconnaissance and exploitation. Barbed wire, machine guns, artillery, and continuous trench systems sharply restricted mounted operations on the Western Front. Cavalry remained more active in the Middle East and on the Eastern Front, where lower troop density and wider operational spaces permitted maneuver. Even there, mounted formations commonly combined horseback transport with dismounted fighting.
Cavalry continued to operate during the Russian Civil War, where large distances and weak transport infrastructure preserved its operational relevance. Semyon Budyonny commanded the Red First Cavalry Army, while Konstantin Mamontov led major mounted raids for the White movement. These forces used sabers and firearms alongside machine-gun carts and supporting artillery, reflecting the coexistence of horse mobility with industrial weaponry.
During the Second World War, mechanization transferred most traditional cavalry functions to armored cars, tanks, motorcycles, and aircraft. Horse-mounted troops still served in substantial numbers, particularly where armies lacked motor vehicles or where terrain restricted their use. Their role centered increasingly on transport, patrol, and dismounted combat rather than shock action against formed modern units.
Doctrine and logistical structure
Cavalry's battlefield behavior cannot be separated from horse management. A military horse required regular feeding, watering, grooming, and veterinary supervision, while hard movement reduced its condition even in the absence of combat. Campaigns therefore imposed a logistical burden extending beyond the number of mounted soldiers. Remount systems had to acquire suitable animals, train them to tolerate noise and congestion, and distribute replacements among units.
Different functions required different physical characteristics. Heavy cavalry favored larger horses capable of carrying a rider with substantial equipment, although historical warhorses were generally smaller than modern heavy draft breeds. Long-range light cavalry placed greater emphasis on endurance and efficient forage use. Artillery teams and supply columns created additional demand for horses whose work differed from that of riding animals.
Command and control also shaped cavalry effectiveness. Formations moving at speed occupied more ground than infantry and could lose alignment through obstacles or variations in pace. Once committed to close action, cavalry required space to recover cohesion before another organized movement. Reserves consequently served not only as additional striking power but also as a means of sustaining control after an initial engagement.
Mechanized legacy
Modern armies preserve cavalry terminology for units that perform reconnaissance, security, and mobile combat with armored vehicles or aircraft. Armored cavalry uses sensors, communications systems, and mobile weapons to identify opposing forces while protecting the movement of larger formations. Air cavalry applies related concepts through helicopters, combining rapid transport with aerial reconnaissance and fire support.
These organizations descend institutionally from horse cavalry but do not reproduce its tactical mechanics. Engines removed dependence upon fodder and remounts while creating a corresponding requirement for fuel, maintenance, and spare parts. The continuity lies principally in operational function: the acquisition of information, control of space, protection of flanks, and rapid concentration against vulnerable points.
