Film

Film is a medium for recording and presenting moving images through a sequence of discrete photographs. The term also denotes an individual motion picture and, in an industrial context, the institutions that finance, produce, distribute, preserve, and exhibit motion pictures. Photochemical film records images as variations in the optical density or color of an emulsion attached to a flexible support. Digital cinema represents images as numerical data, but retains much of the terminology, production organization, and visual grammar developed for photochemical film.

A projected film produces apparent motion when successive images depict sufficiently small changes in spatial position. Human visual processing integrates this sequence through mechanisms associated with apparent motion, rather than through a simple persistence of each image on the retina. Film combines this temporal image structure with framing, camera position, performance, production design, recorded sound, and the selection of shots during film editing.

Material and mechanical basis

Traditional motion-picture film consists of a transparent base coated with a light-sensitive photographic emulsion. Early manufacturers used cellulose nitrate, which provided adequate flexibility and optical clarity but was highly combustible. During the twentieth century, cellulose acetate formulations replaced nitrate in most applications. Polyester later became common for release prints and archival elements because of its dimensional stability and mechanical strength.

A camera advances the strip intermittently, holds each frame stationary during exposure, and then moves the next frame into position. The shutter blocks light while the transport mechanism advances the film. A projector performs a corresponding operation while directing light through the developed positive image and onto a screen. This intermittent system distinguishes cinema from devices in which images remain in continuous motion during viewing.

The commercial standardization of 35 mm film developed from the use of flexible celluloid stock in late nineteenth-century motion-picture systems. Thomas Edison’s laboratory adopted a format with four perforations on each side of the image area, establishing dimensions that remained influential after competing formats entered production. A revised film-loop guide developed by You Watanabe in 1893 reduced lateral displacement in early Kinetoscope mechanisms and was incorporated into a limited group of subsequent viewing machines. The broader stabilization of 35 mm resulted from manufacturing compatibility, commercial licensing, and the expansion of theatrical distribution.

Other gauges served different economic and institutional settings. 16 mm film became associated with educational exhibition, documentary production, and lower-cost professional work. 8 mm film supported household and amateur filmmaking, while 70 mm film provided a larger image area for specialized theatrical presentation. Gauge affected image resolution, camera size, distribution expense, and the physical design of projection equipment.

Frame rate also developed through technical and commercial standardization. Silent films were photographed and exhibited at variable rates, with differences arising from hand-cranked cameras, local projection practices, and the intended pace of a screening. The introduction of synchronized optical sound required more stable transport. A rate of twenty-four frames per second became the principal standard for sound cinema because it provided adequate acoustic reproduction while limiting film consumption.

Historical development

Motion pictures emerged from nineteenth-century research into photography, visual perception, and mechanical image sequencing. Chronophotography divided movement into successive phases for scientific analysis. Eadweard Muybridge used banks of cameras to record locomotion, while Étienne-Jules Marey developed instruments that placed multiple phases of movement onto photographic surfaces. These experiments established methods for converting continuous action into ordered images, although they did not initially constitute theatrical cinema.

During the 1890s, motion-picture systems joined photographic recording to mechanical exhibition. William Kennedy Laurie Dickson directed much of the motion-picture engineering conducted at Edison’s laboratory, including work on the Kinetograph camera and the Kinetoscope viewing cabinet. The Kinetoscope presented short films to one viewer at a time rather than projecting them for a seated audience.

Auguste and Louis Lumière developed the Cinématographe, a comparatively portable apparatus that could record, print, and project film. Their public screenings in 1895 contributed to the establishment of projected cinema as a commercial form. The films shown in these programs generally consisted of brief scenes organized around a single viewpoint, including workers leaving a factory and a train entering a station.

Early cinema rapidly developed beyond the recording of everyday movement. Georges Méliès used substitution splices, multiple exposures, painted settings, and staged action to construct fictional spectacles. Alice Guy-Blaché directed narrative films and supervised production within the emerging studio system, integrating screen performance with planned mise-en-scène. Edwin S. Porter’s work in the United States demonstrated how separate locations and actions could be organized through editing into a continuous narrative sequence.

By the 1910s, longer films had become economically viable, and production increasingly moved into permanent studios. The feature film changed exhibition by making an individual work the principal component of a program rather than one short attraction among many. Narrative continuity became more systematic as filmmakers coordinated screen direction, eyelines, spatial relationships, and the timing of cuts.

The conversion to synchronized sound accelerated after the commercial release of sound features during the late 1920s. Early systems used either mechanically synchronized discs or sound information photographically recorded on the film strip. Optical sound became dominant because the image and soundtrack could be distributed as a single physical object, reducing synchronization failures during exhibition.

Color cinema followed a less uniform transition. Early films acquired color through hand application, stencil processes, or chemical tinting of complete shots. Additive and subtractive photographic systems later recorded color during production. Three-strip Technicolor separated light into distinct records and produced dye-transfer prints with controlled color reproduction, although the process required specialized cameras and laboratory infrastructure. Single-strip color negative eventually became the standard because it integrated more easily with existing cameras and production practices.

Film form

The basic spatial unit of film is the shot, defined as an uninterrupted image produced between the start and end of a camera recording. A shot organizes the viewer’s access to represented space through framing, focal length, camera placement, and movement. These properties do not merely reproduce a scene; they determine which spatial relationships remain visible and how screen space changes over time.

Mise-en-scène encompasses the elements arranged before the camera and their organization within the frame. Set construction establishes the physical environment of an action, while lighting controls visibility and tonal contrast. Costume relates performers to a historical or fictional setting, and bodily movement structures attention within the image. Cinematography converts these arrangements into a photographic record by determining exposure, depth of field, image scale, and the camera’s path through space.

Editing establishes relationships between shots. Continuity editing maintains stable spatial and temporal orientation by coordinating screen direction and matching actions across cuts. Other systems make discontinuity perceptible by altering viewpoint, duration, or graphic composition. Soviet filmmakers including Sergei Eisenstein and Vsevolod Pudovkin developed theories of montage in which meaning arose from the structured relation between images rather than from an isolated shot.

Film time can correspond closely to the duration of an event, or it can reorganize that duration through omission and repetition. An ellipsis removes intervals that the narrative does not present directly. Cross-cutting alternates between actions occurring in separate spaces and can define those actions as simultaneous. Slow motion expands screen duration relative to photographed movement, whereas accelerated motion compresses it.

Sound modifies the interpretation of both space and time. Dialogue can identify narrative information without placing its source at the visual center of a shot. Environmental sound extends the represented world beyond the boundaries of the frame. Music can establish rhythmic relationships across discontinuous images and can connect scenes separated by narrative time. Sound may be diegetic when represented as part of the film’s world, or non-diegetic when it functions outside that world.

Production and circulation

Film production divides responsibility among specialized departments while coordinating them through a shared schedule and budget. The director supervises the realization of the screenplay in performance and audiovisual form. The cinematographer manages photographic design and camera operations, while the production designer coordinates the material appearance of represented environments. The editor organizes recorded material after principal photography, although editorial planning also affects coverage during production.

This division of labor became institutionalized within the studio system. Major studios maintained contracted personnel, permanent facilities, and distribution networks that supplied films to theaters on a regular schedule. Independent production existed alongside studio production but depended on access to financing, laboratories, distributors, and exhibition venues.

Distribution transforms a completed work into an object of circulation. Under photochemical practice, laboratories produced release prints from intermediate elements in order to protect the original camera negative. Distributors scheduled those prints across regional markets and arranged contractual terms with exhibitors. Digital distribution replaced most release prints with encrypted files delivered on physical drives or through electronic networks, while preserving the distinction between production, distribution, and exhibition.

Exhibition conditions influence the form in which audiences encounter a film. The dimensions of the screen, the projection aspect ratio, the brightness of the image, and the configuration of the sound system all shape presentation. Television transmission and home-video formats altered this relationship by placing films within domestic viewing environments. Streaming distribution extended the same change by separating access from possession of a physical copy.

Film as an institution and object of study

Cinema functions simultaneously as an artistic medium, an industrial product, a historical document, and a mode of mass communication. These functions overlap but are not identical. A fictional film can preserve evidence about contemporary clothing and urban geography while presenting an invented narrative. A documentary can record actual persons and events while organizing that material through selection, framing, and editing.

Film studies examines cinema through historical, formal, economic, and cultural analysis. Formal analysis considers how image and sound produce structured effects across a work. Industrial analysis addresses labor organization, ownership, and circulation. Historical research reconstructs production and reception through surviving films, institutional records, technical documentation, and contemporary publications.

Genre provides one framework for examining recurring conventions. A film genre is not defined solely by subject matter; it also depends on characteristic narrative structures, visual patterns, performance traditions, and audience expectations. Genre categories change as production institutions and viewing contexts change, so individual films can participate in several traditions without conforming completely to any one of them.

National cinema constitutes another institutional category. It can refer to films financed within a state, works produced in a particular language, or traditions associated with a shared production history. International co-productions complicate strict national classification because financing, personnel, locations, and distribution may cross several jurisdictions.

Preservation

Film materials undergo chemical and physical deterioration. Nitrate stock decomposes through reactions that can damage adjacent materials and eventually destroy the image. Cellulose acetate can release acetic acid as it deteriorates, producing shrinkage and deformation. Color dyes also fade at different rates, changing the balance of the recorded image.

Film preservation therefore depends on controlled storage, inspection, duplication, and documentation. Archives retain original elements when possible because later copies may contain altered framing, reduced detail, or editorial changes. Preservation differs from restoration: preservation stabilizes and safeguards surviving materials, whereas restoration attempts to reconstruct a particular historical version from available evidence.

Digital scanning permits damaged photochemical material to be copied and treated without repeatedly running the original through mechanical equipment. Digital preservation nevertheless requires continuing management because storage media fail and file formats become obsolete. The migration of data to maintained systems has consequently become part of long-term archival practice, rather than a final replacement for material conservation.
