It served as the group’s annual Aqours Club theme for 2023 and was issued by Lantis on 30 June 2023 as the principal musical component of the Aqours Club CD Set 2023 Clear Edition. The recording uses the nine-member configuration associated with the group’s principal activities.

The title combines the English noun “gemstone” with the romanized Japanese word deai, meaning an encounter or meeting. Its segmented spelling, “DE-A-I,” separates the word into phonetic units while preserving its Japanese pronunciation. Within the song, the gemstone functions as a metaphor for relationships whose significance becomes visible through accumulated experience, while the encounter supplies the event from which that process begins.

Composition and musical structure

Title and thematic terminology

The use of deai rather than the direct English word “encounter” retains a specifically Japanese semantic range. In ordinary usage, deai can denote an initial meeting, the beginning of a relationship, or an event whose importance becomes apparent retrospectively. The hyphenated typography makes the familiar word visually unfamiliar, allowing each syllabic component to appear as a separate facet of the title.

“Gemstone” provides a complementary material metaphor. A natural mineral specimen acquires a different optical appearance when viewed from another direction or modified by cutting, and the song applies that change in appearance to shared memories. The metaphor does not equate personal value with monetary price; it concerns the transformation of perception over time and the coexistence of multiple views of the same encounter.
