Mari Ohara

Mari Ohara (小原鞠莉, Ōhara Mari; born 13 June) is a Japanese school administrator and school idol associated with Uranohoshi Girls' High School in Uchiura, Numazu, Japan. She served as the institution's student chairwoman while enrolled as a third-year student and performed as a member of Aqours. Her simultaneous position within the school's administration and its principal extracurricular performance group made her a central participant in the final phase of Uranohoshi's institutional history.

Ohara was also a member of Guilty Kiss, a three-person subdivision of Aqours. Her performance persona combined Japanese school-idol conventions with English and Italian expressions derived from her international family environment. The English exclamation “Shiny!” became particularly associated with her public presentation.

Family and education

Ohara was born to a Japanese father and an Italian-American mother. The Ohara family controlled an international hotel business and possessed substantial economic interests in the area surrounding Uranohoshi Girls' High School. These holdings included a hotel on Awashima, where Ohara resided after returning to Uchiura.

Her education included an extended period abroad between her first and third years of high school. This international experience influenced her speech, which incorporated English phrases and Italian vocabulary into otherwise Japanese conversation. The resulting pattern functioned as an ordinary feature of her communication rather than as a separate language system.

During her first year at Uranohoshi, Ohara formed an early school-idol group with Kanan Matsuura and Dia Kurosawa. The group predated Aqours and developed under the contemporary influence of μ's, whose activities at Otonokizaka High School had established a prominent model for student-organized idol performance.

The group dissolved after difficulties surrounding an important performance. Matsuura had sustained a leg injury during training and withdrew from the event to prevent Ohara from abandoning an opportunity to study overseas. Kurosawa cooperated with Matsuura's decision, while Ohara interpreted their conduct as a rejection of their shared activity. The resulting separation remained unresolved throughout Ohara's period abroad.

Return to Uranohoshi

Ohara returned to Uchiura during her third year and assumed the office of student chairwoman at Uranohoshi. Her family's ownership interest in the school gave her an administrative role unusual for a current student, although her daily responsibilities remained integrated with student life. Her return coincided with declining enrollment and the proposed closure of the institution.

At that time, Chika Takami had begun organizing a school-idol club as a means of attracting applicants and preserving the school. Riko Sakurauchi contributed musical composition and piano performance to the developing group. You Watanabe participated in its formation, stage work, and costume production while continuing her involvement in competitive diving. Together, their activities established the initial operating structure of Aqours before the older students joined.

Ohara did not immediately enter the group. In her administrative capacity, she approved the club under performance conditions intended to measure whether it possessed sufficient student support. Her requirements placed the emerging organization within the school's formal extracurricular system while allowing it to operate during the enrollment crisis.

The unresolved history among Ohara, Matsuura, and Kurosawa subsequently became part of Aqours' organizational development. Ohara sought to restore her friendship with Matsuura, while Kurosawa maintained a restrictive position toward school-idol activity because of the earlier group's collapse. Disclosure of Matsuura's injury and the reason for the abandoned performance ended the misunderstanding. The three students then joined Aqours, completing its nine-member composition.

Aqours

Within Aqours, Ohara occupied the position of an older member whose prior performance experience supplemented the work of the newer participants. Takami remained the group's principal organizer, while Sakurauchi provided much of its musical composition. Watanabe contributed costume design and supported the coordination of rehearsals and performances. Ohara's work centered on vocal performance, group administration, and the management of conflicts inherited from the earlier school-idol group.

Kurosawa supplied detailed knowledge of school-idol practice and exercised disciplinary control during training. Matsuura directed physical conditioning and choreography. Ruby Kurosawa contributed costume construction and specialized knowledge of idol culture, while Hanamaru Kunikida entered the group through her association with Ruby. Yoshiko Tsushima, who publicly used the name “Yohane,” incorporated a theatrical fallen-angel identity into the group's performances.

Ohara's position did not confer artistic command over Aqours. Decisions were made collectively, and the members' division into school-year cohorts shaped the group's internal organization. Ohara belonged to the third-year cohort with Matsuura and Kurosawa, whose earlier friendship and separation formed a distinct component of the group's history.

Aqours participated in the national Love Live! competition while conducting recruitment activities for Uranohoshi. The group increased public attention toward the school but did not secure the required number of applicants before the administrative deadline. Uranohoshi consequently proceeded toward closure and consolidation despite Aqours' later competitive success.

Ohara remained both chairwoman and club member during this process. Her dual status joined institutional governance to the student campaign without eliminating the legal and financial constraints governing the school. Aqours therefore changed the cultural record of Uranohoshi but did not reverse the closure decision.

Guilty Kiss

Ohara performed in Guilty Kiss with Riko Sakurauchi and Yoshiko Tsushima. The unit operated as one of Aqours' three internal subdivisions, alongside CYaRon! and AZALEA. Guilty Kiss used a comparatively dramatic musical and visual style, which accommodated Tsushima's theatrical persona, Sakurauchi's musical training, and Ohara's multilingual performance manner.

The unit did not function independently from Aqours' institutional structure. Its recordings and appearances extended the larger group's repertoire while preserving the same school affiliation and membership framework. Ohara's participation consequently represented a specialized part of her activity within Aqours rather than a separate professional career.

Public persona

Ohara's public presentation was marked by physical expressiveness, close interpersonal contact, and frequent shifts in vocal register. She regularly pronounced English phrases with exaggerated intonation and used “Shiny!” as an expression of approval or excitement. Her speech also included the Italian word “buono,” particularly in relation to food.

These features contrasted with her administrative office but did not displace it. During formal decisions concerning Uranohoshi, she communicated as the school's chairwoman and represented the interests of its governing family. During club activity, she interacted with the other members as a fellow student and performer. The contrast between these settings constituted a recurring aspect of her role at the school.

Her relationship with Matsuura remained especially important to her conduct. Their reconciliation resolved the conflict that had ended the earlier group, while Kurosawa's participation restored the original three-person friendship within Aqours. The older students' reunion also transferred their prior experience into a club initially created by Takami, Sakurauchi, and Watanabe.

Graduation and the closure of Uranohoshi

Following Aqours' victory in the Love Live competition, Ohara completed her final year with Matsuura and Kurosawa. Uranohoshi closed as an independent institution, and its remaining students were transferred to another school. The preservation of the Uranohoshi name through Aqours became separate from the continued operation of the campus itself.

After graduation, Ohara traveled to Italy in connection with her family's plans for her higher education. Matsuura and Kurosawa accompanied her, and the subsequent dispute over their futures involved both familial authority and the continuation of their friendship. Ohara ultimately retained direct involvement in determining her postsecondary course rather than accepting a wholly predetermined arrangement.

Her graduation ended her administrative service at Uranohoshi and concluded the period in which her school governance and performance activities overlapped. Her recorded work with Aqours and Guilty Kiss remained associated with the school's final academic years and with the development of school-idol activity in Numazu.
