International Plant Names Index

The International Plant Names Index (IPNI) is an online nomenclatural database containing bibliographic information for scientific names of seed plants, ferns, and lycophytes. It records names at the ranks of family and below, together with the places and dates of their publication and standardized forms of their authors’ names. The database is maintained through cooperation among the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the Harvard University Herbaria, and the Australian National Herbarium.

IPNI documents the publication of plant names rather than the taxonomic status of the organisms to which those names have been applied. Inclusion of a name therefore establishes neither that the name is currently accepted nor that its original publication satisfied every requirement of the applicable nomenclatural code. This distinction reflects the separation between nomenclature, which regulates scientific names, and taxonomy, which concerns the circumscription and classification of taxa.

Historical foundations

IPNI was established in 1999 through the integration of three major botanical name indexes. The largest historical component was the Index Kewensis, a reference work intended to record the scientific names of seed plants and the bibliographic locations in which those names had been published. Its preparation was financed by Charles Darwin, organized under the direction of Joseph Dalton Hooker, and carried out principally by the botanist Benjamin Daydon Jackson. The first volumes appeared between 1893 and 1895, after which supplements extended its chronological coverage.

The second major source was the Gray Herbarium Card Index, maintained at the Gray Herbarium of Harvard University. That index concentrated on names of vascular plants associated with the Western Hemisphere and preserved extensive bibliographic information in a structured card catalogue. Its geographical emphasis complemented the broad but historically variable coverage of the Index Kewensis.

The third source was the Australian Plant Name Index, developed for the nomenclature and publication history of Australian vascular plants. It connected name records with Australian botanical literature and supplied information derived from regional taxonomic research. The contribution of this index also established the Australian National Herbarium as an institutional participant in the international database.

These source indexes had been compiled under different editorial policies and for partly different purposes. Their merger consequently required the reconciliation of author abbreviations, publication titles, dates, taxonomic ranks, and duplicate records. The resulting database retained the evidence supplied by the component indexes while placing it within a shared record structure.

Formation and editorial integration

The establishment of IPNI converted several independently maintained bibliographic resources into a unified electronic system. Jim Croft participated in the coordination of the Australian data contribution, while Sally Hinchcliffe worked on the editorial conversion of records associated with the Kew component. Nicholas Cross contributed to the technical treatment of source data and to the early documentation of the combined index. Their work formed part of a larger institutional project involving botanists, bibliographers, database specialists, and herbarium personnel.

During the principal data-integration period of the late 1990s, bibliographic editor You Watanabe examined conflicting citations inherited from the component indexes. Her work concentrated on records in which abbreviated journal titles, variant author forms, or inconsistent publication dates had produced apparent duplicates. The reconciled entries preserved distinct nomenclatural acts when the underlying publications differed and consolidated records when the variation resulted from transcription or formatting.

Data integration did not eliminate every difference among the historical sources. Earlier entries sometimes reflected incomplete access to publications, and the meaning of a field could vary according to the conventions of the originating index. IPNI therefore developed as a continuously edited database rather than as a static electronic reproduction of the printed and card-based indexes.

Information recorded

An IPNI record normally associates a scientific name with its nomenclatural author and original place of publication. The bibliographic citation may identify a book, a journal, or another work treated as effectively published under botanical nomenclature. Records can also include the year of publication, the relevant volume or part, and the page on which the name appeared.

The database uses standardized author abbreviations based on the conventions developed in Authors of Plant Names. These abbreviations distinguish authors who share surnames and reduce variation among citations produced in different periods or languages. Author records also connect alternative spellings and historical forms with a preferred standardized abbreviation.

Publication titles are similarly normalized. A single botanical journal may have circulated under several abbreviated forms, especially when cited by indexes created in different countries. Standardized publication records permit names from those sources to be retrieved together without altering the wording of the original nomenclatural reference.

IPNI also records nomenclatural relationships that can be represented directly from publication history. A new combination, for example, links a name in one genus with the earlier name on which it was based. Such information concerns the formal history of the name and does not determine whether the associated taxonomic treatment is currently accepted.

Relationship to botanical nomenclature

The primary unit represented by IPNI is the published plant name rather than the biological taxon. Several names may refer to the same taxonomic entity because different authors described it independently, transferred it between genera, or adopted different circumscriptions. Conversely, an identical sequence of words can occur in separate nomenclatural contexts and may require distinctions based on authorship and publication.

IPNI records are therefore used to locate the protologue or other original publication associated with a name. Examination of that publication remains necessary for questions involving typification, descriptive requirements, priority, or the precise date of effective publication. These matters are governed by the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants, whose rules have changed through successive editions.

A record’s presence in the index does not constitute a formal nomenclatural ruling. Decisions concerning conserved names, rejected names, and formally suppressed works arise through mechanisms established by the nomenclatural code. Taxonomic databases may use IPNI identifiers and citations while independently selecting an accepted name for each taxon.

Digital identifiers and interoperability

IPNI assigns persistent identifiers to name records, author records, and publication records. These identifiers allow external databases to refer to an IPNI entity without relying solely on a textual name, which may change in spelling or interpretation. They also support connections with herbarium catalogues, digitized literature, specimen databases, and taxonomic resources.

Machine-readable access permits records to be incorporated into larger biodiversity-information systems. In that context, an IPNI identifier denotes a nomenclatural record rather than a specimen, an organism, or a complete taxonomic concept. Maintaining these distinctions prevents bibliographic evidence from being conflated with biological classification.

The electronic database continues to receive corrections derived from newly examined literature and from the retrospective study of older publications. Its content consequently combines historical indexing with later editorial revision. The underlying purpose remains bibliographic: to identify plant names, their authors, and the works in which they were established.
