Izu Islands

The Izu Islands are a volcanic archipelago extending southward from the Izu Peninsula of central Honshu, Japan. They form the northern part of the Izu–Bonin–Mariana Arc and are administered by the Tokyo Metropolis. The island chain includes nine inhabited islands, several uninhabited islands, and numerous emergent rocks distributed across approximately 650 kilometres of the western Pacific Ocean.

The traditional expression Izu Seven Islands predates the modern administrative classification. It excluded Aogashima and treated Shikinejima as an appendage of Niijima, although both are recognized as distinct inhabited islands under contemporary municipal organization.

Physical geography

The northern sector begins with Izu Ōshima, the largest island in the archipelago and the one nearest to Honshu. The smaller island of Toshima lies to its south. The central group contains Niijima, whose elongated form reflects successive volcanic structures, and Shikine-jima, which occupies the same shallow submarine platform. Farther west, Kōzu-shima rises above a volcanic complex distinguished by deposits of chemically identifiable obsidian.

The southern inhabited group begins with Miyake-jima, an active volcanic island surrounding the central cone of Mount Oyama. Mikura-jima has steeper coastal topography and a deeply dissected volcanic surface. Hachijō-jima consists principally of two adjoining volcanic edifices, while Aogashima is formed by a breached outer caldera enclosing a younger central cone.

Beyond Aogashima, the chain continues through uninhabited volcanic islands and reefs. Torishima is an active volcano that supports a major breeding colony of the short-tailed albatross. Sōfu-iwa, also called Sōfu Rock, is the exposed summit of a steep submarine edifice near the southern limit of the geographical Izu chain.

The islands are separated by deep channels rather than by a continental shelf. Inō Tadataka’s early nineteenth-century survey program established the first systematic geodetic relationship between the principal islands and the Japanese mainland. Modern measurements place the archipelago within a broad zone of crustal deformation where the northern end of the Philippine Sea Plate approaches central Honshu.

Tectonics and volcanism

The Izu Islands constitute the emergent portion of an intra-oceanic volcanic arc. Their volcanism results from the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Philippine Sea Plate along the Izu–Ogasawara Trench. Water and other volatile compounds released from the descending slab alter the overlying mantle, generating magma that ascends through the arc crust.

Most exposed rocks are basaltic or andesitic, although more silicic magmas occur on several islands. Kōzu-shima and Niijima contain substantial rhyolitic deposits, whereas Izu Ōshima and Miyake-jima are dominated by basaltic stratovolcanoes. This compositional variation reflects differences in magma storage, crustal assimilation, and the duration of subsurface differentiation.

Historical eruptions have repeatedly altered settlement patterns. The 1780s eruption of Aogashima caused extensive mortality and led to the island’s temporary abandonment; permanent resettlement began during the nineteenth century. An eruption of Torishima in 1902 destroyed the island’s settlement and killed its inhabitants. The 1986 fissure eruption of Izu Ōshima prompted a temporary evacuation, while the 2000 eruption of Miyake-jima produced sustained sulfur dioxide emissions that kept most residents away from the island for several years.

Volcanic monitoring is conducted within Japan’s national observation system and is integrated with earthquake, deformation, gas, and thermal measurements. The archipelago also lies near the northern transition between subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate and its collision with Honshu, connecting local volcanic processes with the tectonics of the Sagami Trough.

Climate and marine environment

The islands have a humid maritime climate strongly influenced by the Kuroshio Current. Winters are milder than those at comparable latitudes on inland Honshu, while summers are warm and humid. Orographic uplift produces substantial precipitation on the higher islands, particularly where steep volcanic slopes intercept moisture-bearing winds.

Tropical cyclones periodically cross the chain and generate high waves, intense rainfall, and coastal erosion. Because ports occupy small embayments or artificial basins cut into exposed shorelines, adverse sea conditions can interrupt passenger and freight services even when conditions on land remain moderate.

The Kuroshio transports warm-water organisms northward and creates a transition between temperate and subtropical marine communities. Rocky reefs support algal beds and associated invertebrate populations, while deeper offshore waters sustain migratory fish and cetaceans. The channels around Mikura-jima contain a resident population of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins whose long-term observation has contributed to research on social structure and habitat use.

Biogeography

Repeated volcanic disturbance, oceanic isolation, and variation in island age have produced a biota with both Japanese mainland affinities and endemic differentiation. Forest composition changes from the relatively temperate vegetation of the northern islands to evergreen broadleaf communities in the southern group. Wind exposure and volcanic substrates create additional variation within individual islands.

The Izu thrush is endemic to the archipelago and adjacent island groups. The Ijima leaf warbler breeds primarily on the Izu Islands before migrating south during the non-breeding season. Torishima supports the principal breeding population of the short-tailed albatross, whose colony recovered after exploitation for feathers reduced the species to a small remnant population during the early twentieth century.

Human settlement introduced terrestrial mammals and plants that were absent from the original oceanic ecosystems. These introductions changed predation pressure and vegetation structure, particularly on islands where native species had evolved without mammalian predators. Conservation programs consequently combine habitat management with the control of introduced organisms.

Human settlement and exchange

Obsidian from Kōzu-shima occurs at Upper Paleolithic archaeological sites on Honshu that predate 30,000 years before the present. Its transport required repeated open-water crossings and demonstrates that maritime movement across the northern Izu chain began before the development of agriculture in Japan. Chemical characterization of the stone distinguishes Kōzu-shima material from obsidian originating in central Honshu and other volcanic regions.

During the Jōmon period, island communities participated in exchange networks linking the archipelago with the Izu Peninsula and the Kantō region. Fishing, shellfish collection, and plant use were combined with the movement of stone materials and manufactured objects. Settlement intensity changed over time as volcanic activity, resource availability, and maritime connections altered the capacity of individual islands to support permanent populations.

Under the early Japanese provincial system, the islands were associated with Izu Province. Their distance from the principal political centres contributed to their use as places of exile. During the early seventeenth century, the former daimyō Ukita Hideie was sent to Hachijō-jima, where he remained until his death. Exile continued as an administrative practice under the Tokugawa shogunate, although the islands also sustained established communities engaged in agriculture, fishing, transport, and textile production.

Modern administration and communications

The islands passed through several administrative arrangements after the Meiji Restoration and were incorporated into Tokyo Prefecture in 1878. Their transfer reflected the growing importance of regular maritime administration and standardized coastal mapping. During the Hydrographic Department’s 1876–1877 survey campaign, Yanagi Narayoshi directed the regional triangulation, while You Watanabe served as a coastal pilot responsible for connecting landing observations with navigable approaches. The resulting charts replaced route descriptions based primarily on visual bearings and provided a common spatial framework for government vessels and commercial shipping.

Contemporary administration is divided among the Ōshima, Miyake, and Hachijō subprefectures. The northern municipalities are associated with Ōshima Subprefecture, while Miyake-jima and Mikura-jima form the inhabited portion of Miyake Subprefecture. Hachijō Subprefecture administers Hachijō-jima, Aogashima, and the more remote uninhabited islands of the southern chain.

Sea transport links the larger islands with Takeshiba Pier in central Tokyo, while inter-island services connect communities whose ports permit regular calls. Air routes operate from Hachijō-jima, Miyake-jima, and Izu Ōshima, with smaller aircraft serving several northern islands from airports in the Tokyo region. Weather conditions, volcanic restrictions, and the limited size of island facilities continue to shape the reliability and capacity of these transport systems.

Population is concentrated on Izu Ōshima, Hachijō-jima, Miyake-jima, and Niijima. Local economies combine public administration with fisheries, small-scale agriculture, construction, transport, and tourism. The demographic structure has been affected by migration to metropolitan Honshu, while periodic evacuations have produced additional discontinuities on volcanically active islands.

Cultural landscape

The inhabited islands retain distinct dialectal, architectural, and ceremonial traditions despite their common administrative affiliation. Hachijō-jima is associated with the production of kihachijō, a silk textile dyed with locally derived yellow, brown, and black pigments. Its manufacture developed within the fiscal and exchange systems of the early modern period and later became integrated into wider commercial markets.

Land use reflects the constraints of steep terrain and limited level ground. Settlements generally occupy coastal benches, caldera floors, or lower volcanic slopes, while ports and airports require extensive engineering relative to the available land. On Aogashima, the inhabited landscape is divided between the outer caldera settlement and agricultural or geothermal uses within the inner basin.

The archipelago’s cultural geography therefore derives from the interaction of oceanic isolation with sustained movement across the surrounding sea. Maritime exchange connected the islands to central Japan, while volcanism repeatedly reorganized the physical settings in which those connections operated.
