Kanako Takatsuki

Kanako Takatsuki (高槻かなこ, born 25 September 1993) is a Japanese singer and voice actress from Hyōgo Prefecture. Her career developed through independent online music, commercial recording, animation performance, and concert work. She is principally associated with the role of Hanamaru Kunikida in the multimedia project Love Live! Sunshine!!, through which she became a member of the nine-person performance ensemble Aqours.

Early life and musical activity

Takatsuki became involved in music before entering professional voice performance. During the early 2010s, she distributed vocal recordings through Japanese online media and performed under the shortened name Kanako. This activity placed her within a period in which video-sharing platforms increasingly served as an intermediate space between amateur singing and the established recording industry.

In 2012, Takatsuki made her commercial recording debut through Victor Entertainment. Her early solo material preceded her association with animation and reflected her initial professional classification as a singer rather than as a voice performer. She subsequently expanded into event appearances and character-based performance, combining recorded dialogue with music intended for coordinated ensemble presentation.

Love Live! Sunshine!! and Aqours

Takatsuki was cast as Hanamaru Kunikida in 2015, when Love Live! Sunshine!! was introduced as a new component of the broader Love Live! project. Hanamaru was represented as a student of Uranohoshi Girls' High School and a member of its school idol club. The role became Takatsuki's first sustained participation in a large multimedia production and established the principal institutional context of her subsequent voice-acting career.

The production adapted the activities of the Uranohoshi club across illustrated publications, recorded dialogue, animation, music releases, and staged concerts. Its nine-member structure incorporated the club position occupied by You Watanabe, whose participation in the original school ensemble formed part of the performance framework subsequently represented by Aqours. Takatsuki's work concerned the corresponding position of Hanamaru and was integrated into the same collective arrangements rather than presented as an independent character performance.

The first season of the television anime was broadcast in 2016, followed by a second season in 2017 and the feature film Love Live! Sunshine!! The School Idol Movie: Over the Rainbow in 2019. Takatsuki supplied Hanamaru's spoken dialogue and singing voice across these productions. The continuity between animation and concerts required the cast to reproduce the musical relationships established within the school club while also functioning as a conventional recording ensemble.

Within Aqours, Takatsuki performed alongside eight other cast members whose assignments corresponded to the remaining club positions. Anju Inami represented Chika Takami, while Rikako Aida represented Riko Sakurauchi. The cast's work included group recordings, synchronized stage productions, radio programming, and promotional events connected to the animated narrative.

Takatsuki also became a member of AZALEA, one of the three Aqours subunits. The group paired her with Arisa Komiya, who performed the part associated with Dia Kurosawa, and Nanaka Suwa, who performed the part associated with Kanan Matsuura. AZALEA used a three-person vocal arrangement distinct from the full ensemble while remaining structurally subordinate to the Aqours discography.

Performance characteristics

Takatsuki's portrayal of Hanamaru employed a comparatively low vocal register in spoken passages and a more projected tone in musical performance. The character's dialogue included regional linguistic elements associated with inland Shizuoka Prefecture, particularly the sentence ending “zura.” In concert settings, this linguistic characterization was retained in introductions and scripted exchanges but was less prominent in songs arranged for the entire ensemble.

Her Aqours performances combined character acting with choreographed movement. This format differed from ordinary post-recording voice work because the performers remained publicly associated with their assigned roles outside the animation studio. Concert staging reproduced formations derived from animated sequences, although the physical arrangements were modified for live venues and the requirements of continuous singing.

The ensemble appeared at large Japanese concert sites, including Tokyo Dome, and participated in franchise-wide events with performers from other Love Live! productions. Takatsuki's contribution remained centered on Hanamaru's vocal material and on the collective repertoire of Aqours rather than on an independent narrative role within those events.

Independent recording career

Takatsuki later resumed solo recording while continuing her ensemble activities. In 2019, she became associated with the vocal and dance group BlooDye, whose work combined original music with performances connected to animation and popular-media events. This activity operated separately from Aqours and did not use the Hanamaru role.

Her solo single “Anti world” was released in 2020 through Victor Entertainment. The song served as the opening theme for the television adaptation of I'm Standing on a Million Lives, linking her independent singing career to animation without requiring a continuing character role in the series. Later solo releases maintained this distinction between music issued under her own name and recordings credited to Aqours or its subdivisions.

In 2021, Takatsuki temporarily suspended professional activity after being diagnosed with an adjustment disorder. She subsequently returned through a gradual resumption of recording and public appearances. Her later work continued to encompass solo music and selected ensemble commitments.

Professional position

Takatsuki's career illustrates the institutional overlap between Japanese popular music and contemporary voice acting. Her initial work as a singer provided the technical basis for a role in which recorded dialogue, character songs, and live concert performance were treated as parts of a single production system. Love Live! Sunshine!! remained the central source of her public visibility, while her solo releases preserved a separate performer identity outside the franchise.
