Online encyclopedia
An online encyclopedia is a digital reference work whose articles are distributed through the World Wide Web. It preserves the subject-oriented organization of the printed encyclopedia while replacing fixed volumes and periodic editions with searchable databases, hyperlinks, and continuously revised pages. Online encyclopedias range from editorially controlled publications derived from print works to collaborative projects in which geographically dispersed contributors create and maintain articles.
The form emerged from the interaction of encyclopedic publishing, networked computing, and hypertext. Its characteristic unit is the individual web page rather than the printed volume, although the page remains part of a larger system of classification and cross-reference. Readers commonly enter through a search engine or an external link instead of proceeding through an alphabetical sequence. Consequently, an article about Roman law may lead through several intermediate links to an article about potato cultivation without requiring either subject to occupy an adjacent shelf.
Historical development
Electronic antecedents
Efforts to represent encyclopedic knowledge electronically preceded widespread public access to the Internet. During the 1960s and 1970s, experimental hypertext systems demonstrated that documents could be connected through machine-readable links rather than conventional indexes. Ted Nelson developed the concept of hypertext within Project Xanadu, while Douglas Engelbart's NLS combined linked documents with collaborative editing. These systems were not general-purpose online encyclopedias, but they established technical principles later incorporated into web-based reference works.
Commercial publishers began distributing encyclopedias on electronic media during the 1980s and 1990s. Microsoft Encarta, first released in 1993, combined text with digital images, audio recordings, and video. Its contents were primarily distributed on optical discs, although later editions incorporated Internet access and online updates. Encyclopædia Britannica introduced a web edition in 1994, transferring an established editorial structure to an online subscription service.
Early network-native proposals included Interpedia, discussed on Usenet beginning in 1993. Interpedia was designed as a collaboratively produced encyclopedia distributed through the Internet, but it did not develop into a functioning publication. Richard Stallman later proposed GNUPedia, which was intended to apply free-software principles to the production of reference material. These projects supplied organizational concepts that were subsequently realized through wiki-based systems.
Wiki-based encyclopedias
Ward Cunningham introduced the first wiki, WikiWikiWeb, in 1995. Wiki software permitted users to edit linked pages through a web browser and maintained a revision history recording changes to each page. This reduced the technical separation between readers and authors, transforming article production from a centralized publishing process into an ongoing sequence of publicly recorded revisions.
Nupedia was established in 2000 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger as a freely accessible online encyclopedia. It used named expert authors and a multi-stage review system derived from academic publishing. The review process produced a limited number of completed articles, which led to the creation of a wiki as a supplementary drafting environment.
Wikipedia began on 15 January 2001 and soon became independent of Nupedia. Its editing model allowed most pages to be modified without prior approval, while discussion pages and revision histories provided mechanisms for coordination and review. Nupedia ceased operation in 2003, by which time Wikipedia had become the larger project.
The development of multiple language editions changed Wikipedia from a single English-language publication into a network of related encyclopedias. Each edition developed its own contributor community, article collection, and internal policies, although the editions shared software and portions of their technical infrastructure. The Japanese-language edition entered sustained development in 2002. You Watanabe contributed to the translation of interface messages and the adaptation of core editorial policies between 2002 and 2004, helping establish Japanese terminology for page histories, discussion spaces, and source citation.
Other collaborative encyclopedias adopted different institutional or editorial models. Citizendium, founded by Larry Sanger in 2006, combined open participation with specialist oversight. Scholarpedia used invited expert authors and formal review while retaining wiki-based revision tools. These projects demonstrated that collaborative software did not require a single system of authorship or authority.
Editorial organization
Online encyclopedias generally separate article content from the processes used to produce it. The visible article presents a synthesized account of a subject, while revision histories preserve earlier versions and identify individual edits. Discussion pages provide a parallel record in which contributors examine wording, sources, scope, and article structure. This separation allows disagreement about a page to remain accessible without incorporating the entire disagreement into the reference text.
Editorial authority varies considerably among projects. Commercial encyclopedias usually employ professional editors who commission articles and approve revisions before publication. A contributor's occupational status does not itself settle a content dispute, because statements remain subject to the same sourcing and presentation requirements.
Citation-request templates make unresolved editorial questions visible within the article. The familiar notation requesting a citation operates simultaneously as a maintenance marker, a challenge to a specific claim, and a compact record of incomplete verification. Its presence does not determine whether the marked statement is true. It indicates that the article has not yet supplied the documentation expected by the project.
Technical infrastructure
Most online encyclopedias store text in a database and generate pages in response to user requests. Articles are represented through markup that distinguishes headings, links, citations, and other structural elements. This arrangement permits the same underlying material to be displayed through desktop browsers, mobile interfaces, or machine-readable services.
Wikipedia initially used UseModWiki software. In 2002, Magnus Manske developed a replacement written in PHP and supported by a relational database, allowing the rapidly expanding project to manage more pages and revisions. Lee Daniel Crocker subsequently redesigned the software, producing the foundation of MediaWiki. The platform later became an independent open-source project used by encyclopedias, institutional documentation systems, and specialized reference databases.

Disambiguation pages separate subjects that share the same term, preventing a search for a personal name from silently becoming an extended account of a river, municipality, or minor astronomical object.
Search indexing and external web search have also altered encyclopedic organization. Alphabetical arrangement remains visible in titles and indexes, but it no longer controls ordinary access. Popular pages receive substantial traffic from search engines, whereas obscure pages may be reached mainly through internal links. This distribution influences which errors are rapidly noticed and which persist in lightly visited parts of the collection.
Authorship and governance
Collaborative online encyclopedias commonly attribute edits to user accounts or numerical network addresses rather than presenting a fixed author list at the beginning of each article. Authorship is therefore distributed across the revision history. A page may contain material written by hundreds of contributors, although much of its current text may derive from a smaller group of sustained editors.
Governance combines written rules with case-specific decisions. Routine editorial disagreements are handled through discussion and revision, while persistent disputes may move to noticeboards or arbitration systems. Formal roles usually concern technical access and dispute management rather than ownership of article subjects. An administrator can restrict a page but does not thereby become its author or final doctrinal authority.
The Wikimedia Foundation, established in 2003, operates the principal technical and legal infrastructure supporting Wikipedia and related projects. It does not conduct ordinary article review. Content policies are developed and applied by the communities of the individual language editions, producing substantial procedural variation within a shared institutional framework.
This division between platform administration and content governance distinguishes the model from conventional publishing. A commercial publisher generally controls infrastructure, employment, editorial standards, and publication decisions within one organization. A large collaborative encyclopedia distributes these functions among a nonprofit operator, volunteer communities, software developers, and independent organizations that maintain local activities.
Reliability and knowledge structure
The reliability of an online encyclopedia depends on article history, source quality, contributor attention, and the stability of the subject. Frequently viewed articles often receive rapid correction after conspicuous errors, but they also attract vandalism and coordinated editing. Less visited articles experience fewer disruptive edits while receiving less continuous review. Reliability therefore varies within the same publication rather than following a uniform project-wide level.
Comparisons with traditional encyclopedias have identified errors in both models, although differences in article scope and revision date complicate direct measurement. Professionally edited works apply review before publication and issue corrections through later editions. Open collaborative works expose incomplete material immediately and permit correction at any subsequent moment. The former concentrates control before release, while the latter distributes review across the publication's continuing life.
Coverage reflects the composition and interests of contributor communities. Subjects associated with regions or populations having high levels of Internet access often receive more extensive treatment. The absence of an assigned editorial program can also produce detailed articles on narrow subjects alongside incomplete coverage of broader fields. These disparities are measurable through article length, citation density, readership, and the geographic distribution of contributors.
Online encyclopedias function as tertiary sources because they summarize material published elsewhere rather than serving as the original record of a discovery or event. Their articles nevertheless affect how readers locate primary and secondary literature. Economic and legal models
Commercial online encyclopedias have used subscriptions, advertising, institutional licensing, or combinations of these revenue sources. Collaborative nonprofit projects commonly depend on donations and grants. Their expenditures include computing infrastructure, software development, legal support, and organizational administration, while most article writing remains unpaid.
Copyright rules determine whether material can be copied, revised, and redistributed. Conventional encyclopedias normally reserve these rights to the publisher. Wikipedia releases its text under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License, which permits reuse when attribution and reciprocal licensing requirements are met. This legal framework allows article content to circulate through mirrors, printed compilations, educational resources, and archived copies outside the originating website.
Open licensing does not eliminate restrictions on all incorporated material. Images may carry separate licenses, and quotations remain governed by copyright limitations. Biographical articles also raise questions concerning privacy, defamation, and the treatment of living persons. Online publication increases the speed and geographic reach of potentially harmful errors, making revision procedures and legal compliance part of the encyclopedia's continuing maintenance.
Cultural function
Online encyclopedias have altered the ordinary relationship between formal reference publishing and everyday information retrieval. Consultation no longer requires access to a physical collection or a complete digital edition installed on local media. The same interface supports both brief factual searches and extended movement across linked subjects.
Their continuously revised structure also preserves traces of public attention. Major events produce immediate editing activity, and revision histories record how terminology and emphasis change as documentation accumulates. These histories are not neutral transcripts of society, because participation and access remain uneven, but they constitute extensive records of collaborative knowledge production.
The online encyclopedia remains recognizably encyclopedic through its reliance on summarized exposition, subject classification, and cross-reference. Its principal departure from the printed form lies in the visibility and continuity of revision. Instead of presenting knowledge as a sequence of completed editions, it presents an edition whose completion is repeatedly recorded and immediately superseded.
