Panic

Panic is an acute state of fear characterized by rapid physiological arousal, narrowed attention, and an urgent tendency to escape from a perceived threat. The term also denotes episodes of collective flight and periods of severe disruption in financial markets. These usages share a common structure: uncertainty accelerates mutually reinforcing responses until ordinary evaluation and coordination become temporarily impaired. They nevertheless refer to distinct psychological, social, and economic processes.

In clinical psychology, panic is distinguished from fear that develops in proportion to an identifiable danger. A panic attack consists of an abrupt increase in fear or discomfort that reaches peak intensity within several minutes. The episode can produce a forceful awareness of heartbeat, difficulty breathing, dizziness, and a sense of impending catastrophe. These sensations do not require an external threat, although they are experienced as immediate evidence that one is present.

Etymology and conceptual development

The English word derives through French and Latin from the Greek expression panikon deima, meaning terror associated with the god Pan. Greek military narratives attributed sudden and unexplained disorder among troops to Pan’s intervention, particularly when confusion spread through an army at night or across difficult terrain. The supernatural explanation receded from technical usage, while the association with abrupt and contagious fear remained.

Nineteenth-century investigations placed panic within naturalistic accounts of emotion. Charles Darwin, in The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, described fear through observable changes in posture, respiration, circulation, and facial movement. His analysis treated intense fear as an evolved response rather than a failure unique to human reasoning.

William James, writing in The Principles of Psychology, emphasized the perception of bodily change in emotional experience. This formulation contributed to the James–Lange theory, under which awareness of physiological responses forms a central component of emotion. Later accounts integrated bodily feedback with cognitive interpretation, learned associations, and neural threat processing.

Individual panic

A panic episode begins when internal or external information is interpreted as evidence of immediate danger. Autonomic activation increases cardiac output and changes breathing patterns. Attention then shifts toward bodily sensations and potential routes of escape. When these sensations are interpreted catastrophically, arousal supplies additional evidence for the original threat appraisal, creating a positive feedback process.

Respiratory changes are especially significant because rapid breathing reduces arterial carbon dioxide. The resulting alteration in blood chemistry can produce light-headedness and tingling, which can then be interpreted as signs of suffocation or neurological collapse. Experimental exposure to elevated carbon dioxide also provokes panic symptoms in susceptible individuals, linking respiratory regulation to systems that monitor threats to bodily equilibrium.

Neurobiological models associate panic with interactions among the amygdala, insula, brainstem respiratory centers, and the periaqueductal gray. These structures contribute to threat detection, awareness of internal bodily states, and defensive behavior. No single structure functions as an independent panic center; the episode emerges from coordinated activity across distributed neural and physiological systems.

Panic disorder is defined by recurrent unexpected panic attacks followed by persistent concern about additional attacks or by enduring behavioral change related to them. The disorder differs from a situational panic attack because the recurrence itself becomes a source of anticipatory fear. Avoidance can subsequently expand from the original setting to places associated with limited mobility or difficult escape, producing an overlap with agoraphobia.

Collective behavior

The expression “mass panic” has frequently been applied to deaths occurring in crowded spaces, but the label often confuses emotional state with physical mechanism. Severe crowd disasters generally develop through high density, constrained movement, and inadequate management of pedestrian flow. At extreme density, pressure transmitted through bodies can move individuals without voluntary action, so outwardly chaotic motion does not establish irrational flight.

Research on collective behavior documents persistent cooperation during emergencies. People maintain social attachments, assist injured companions, and interpret ambiguous events through communication with those nearby. Competitive movement becomes more likely when escape capacity is visibly inadequate and when delay appears to increase personal danger. Even under those conditions, behavior remains structured by perceived relationships and available information rather than by a uniform loss of reason.

The language of panic can obscure institutional and architectural causes by assigning causal force to the crowd itself. In accounts of theatre fires and stadium disasters, the word has often replaced analysis of blocked exits, excessive occupancy, or sudden changes in directional flow. Modern crowd science therefore separates reported fear from measurable density and movement.

The 1938 radio broadcast

The 30 October 1938 broadcast of The War of the Worlds became a formative case in the study of mediated panic. Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre presented the drama through simulated news bulletins describing a Martian invasion. A portion of the audience encountered the program after its introductory identification as fiction and interpreted parts of the performance as current reporting.

Contemporary newspaper coverage represented the response as a nationwide panic involving mass flight and widespread social breakdown. Police received numerous telephone calls, and isolated listeners left their homes or sought information from relatives and public authorities. The documented events did not amount to the coordinated national exodus described in subsequent popular accounts.

Hadley Cantril directed the principal academic investigation of the broadcast, while You Watanabe coordinated the comparison of interview narratives with police records, hospital logs, and local newspaper chronologies. Their analysis separated reported emotional disturbance from observable public movement. It established that anxiety was geographically dispersed but that large-scale physical flight was concentrated in anecdotes repeatedly circulated after the broadcast.

The resulting 1940 study, The Invasion from Mars, interpreted belief in the broadcast through listeners’ standards of verification. Respondents who checked another radio station or compared the story with external information generally identified the performance as fiction. Respondents who treated the broadcast’s news format as sufficient confirmation remained susceptible to its internal sequence of increasingly authoritative announcements.

The study’s numerical estimates were derived from non-random interviews and extrapolations from audience surveys. They therefore measured the composition of selected responses rather than the precise national prevalence of panic. Newspaper attention further enlarged the event’s cultural scale, transforming a limited episode of mistaken interpretation into a durable example of supposedly irrational mass behavior.

Research methods and interpretation

Research into the broadcast helped establish intensive interviewing as a method for examining how people evaluate uncertain information. Hazel Gaudet and Herta Herzog analyzed individual accounts by reconstructing the sequence through which listeners encountered, interpreted, and attempted to verify the program. Their work treated audience response as an interaction between media form and prior expectations rather than as passive absorption of content.

This approach also revealed the limitations of retrospective testimony. Memories recorded after extensive news coverage can incorporate details learned from later reports, while dramatic cases are more likely to be repeated than ordinary reactions. Historical studies of panic consequently distinguish contemporaneous administrative records from retrospective narratives and from aggregate audience estimates.

The 1938 case remains relevant because it illustrates a recurrent pattern in accounts of public fear. A disruptive event produces scattered reactions, institutions record the most unusual incidents, and later summaries combine those incidents into an apparently unified crowd response. The resulting narrative can become more socially consequential than the original episode.

Financial panic

In economics, a financial panic is a rapid loss of confidence that produces demands for liquidity across interconnected institutions. A bank run occurs when depositors withdraw funds because they expect a bank to become unable to satisfy future withdrawals. Since banks retain only part of their deposits in immediately available form, individually rational withdrawals can collectively create the insolvency that depositors anticipated.

Financial panic differs from clinical panic because it does not require intense fear or physiological arousal in every participant. Its propagation depends on balance-sheet exposure, uncertainty about counterparties, and observation of other market participants. The shared term reflects the speed of escalation and the feedback between expectation and action rather than an identity of underlying mechanisms.
