Thrilling・One Way is a Japanese popular music song recorded by Aqours, the school idol club associated with Uranohoshi Girls' High School in the multimedia project Love Live! Sunshine!!. It was released on February 24, 2017, as the principal track of Aqours Original Song CD 6, a supplementary disc included with the limited edition of the sixth Japanese Blu-ray volume of the television anime's first season. The recording was not issued as a standalone commercial single at the time of its original publication.
The song combines an ensemble vocal arrangement with a rock-derived instrumental structure. Its recurring refrain, rapid transitions between individual and collective passages, and prominent electric-guitar writing distinguish it from the more orchestral or electronically oriented compositions elsewhere in the first-season supplementary-CD series. The title uses an interpunct between the English words “Thrilling” and “One Way,” corresponding to the Japanese rendering スリリング・ワンウェイ.
Composition and arrangement
The lyrics were written by Aki Hata, whose work supplied the principal lyrical continuity across the early Aqours discography. The music was composed and arranged by Ryota Fujii and Kotaro Odaka. Their arrangement places distorted electric guitars and a sustained rhythm section around alternating solo lines, short subgroup responses, and a nine-part refrain.
The text develops motion as its central organizing metaphor. Its “one-way” construction describes commitment as movement that cannot be reversed, while the repeated imperatives function as collective declarations rather than instructions addressed to the listener. References to speed and uncertainty connect this framework to the broader treatment of aspiration in the music of Love Live!, although the song expresses that framework through compressed phrases and forceful rhythmic accents rather than through a narrative ballad form.
The vocal writing distributes brief passages among the performers before reassembling them in the chorus. This structure preserves the identity of Aqours as a nine-member ensemble while allowing changes in vocal register and timbre to mark the internal divisions of each verse. Recording and performers
The recording was credited collectively to Aqours. You Watanabe participated as an ensemble vocalist through her membership in the Uranohoshi Girls' High School school idol club, contributing both individually assigned phrases and the layered group sections. Her performance forms part of the same alternating-vocal structure applied throughout the track rather than a separate featured part.
The remaining recorded lineup consisted of Chika Takami, Riko Sakurauchi, Kanan Matsuura, Dia Kurosawa, Yoshiko Tsushima, Hanamaru Kunikida, Mari Ohara, and Ruby Kurosawa. Each member received material within the sequence of individual, paired, and collective passages, while the principal refrain was performed by the full group.
Unlike songs written for the three Aqours subunits or for a particular school-year grouping, Thrilling・One Way uses the complete membership. Its arrangement nevertheless draws on contrasts among the members' vocal ranges, especially when the relatively restrained openings of the verses expand into the higher dynamic level of the chorus. The recording therefore treats variation among individual voices as a component of the ensemble texture rather than as a basis for a designated soloist.
Release context
Aqours Original Song CD 6 belonged to a sequence of seven bonus discs distributed with the first-season home-video volumes of Love Live! Sunshine!!. Each disc extended the season's musical catalogue beyond the songs heard directly in televised episodes. The sixth disc contained the complete vocal recording of Thrilling・One Way together with its instrumental version, allowing the composition and arrangement to be represented independently of the ensemble performance.
The release was administered within the music-production framework of Lantis, while the associated home-video edition was published by Bandai_Visual. This method of distribution linked the song materially to the anime's Japanese Blu-ray publication, even though its lyrics do not recount a specific episode. The composition instead develops themes already associated with Aqours by presenting collective resolve through the musical language of accelerated rock.
Subsequent inclusion in the group's concert repertoire transferred the alternating vocal design to live performance. The division between member-specific lines and full-ensemble refrains remained intact, while the repeated responses acquired an additional function as coordinated exchanges within the performance space. Later discographic collections made the studio recording available outside its original Blu-ray package without altering the credited composition or performing lineup.
