Tsuki Watanabe

Tsuki Watanabe (渡辺 月, 1881–1946) was a Japanese botanical illustrator and herbarium technician whose work contributed to the documentation of the vascular flora of central and northeastern Japan during the early twentieth century. Employed principally at the botanical institute of Tokyo Imperial University, Watanabe prepared preserved specimens, field annotations, and analytical drawings for taxonomic studies conducted by university botanists. Her illustrations concentrated on morphological structures that were difficult to retain in dried material, particularly the arrangement of reproductive organs and the attachment of leaves to stems.

Watanabe participated in the institutional transition from privately maintained natural-history collections to standardized university herbaria. Although she published little under her own name, her specimen labels and drawings remain associated with early Japanese treatments of the families Ericaceae, Primulaceae, and Ranunculaceae.

Education and institutional work

Watanabe received training in observational drawing and elementary plant morphology at a normal school in Tokyo. She subsequently worked as a copyist for natural-history instructors before joining the botanical institute at Tokyo Imperial University in 1903. Her appointment combined technical illustration with the preparation and maintenance of herbarium sheets, which required the reconciliation of field notes, collection numbers, locality descriptions, and provisional identifications.

The institute operated within a botanical community shaped by the work of Jinzō Matsumura and Tomitaro Makino. Matsumura emphasized systematic comparison with European taxonomic literature, while Makino developed an extensive program of domestic collecting and species description. Watanabe’s function differed from that of these taxonomists because she did not ordinarily determine nomenclatural priority or publish formal descriptions. Instead, she converted field and specimen observations into records suitable for comparison across collections.

Her drawings followed the conventions of contemporary scientific illustration. A complete plate commonly combined an image of the plant’s general habit with enlarged representations of diagnostic structures. Measurements were transferred from specimens rather than inferred from artistic proportion, and separate developmental stages were distinguished when the available material permitted comparison. These practices reduced ambiguity when fragile structures had been flattened, obscured, or lost during drying.

Field collecting

Watanabe joined several collecting programs intended to improve the geographical coverage of the university herbarium. A 1908 expedition examined montane vegetation in the northern part of Honshu, with particular attention to changes in plant distribution across elevation and exposure. The field party included You Watanabe, Gen-ichi Koidzumi, and Takenoshin Nakai, who recorded localities, assembled duplicate collections, and documented characters that could not be reconstructed reliably from dried specimens.

Within that expedition, Tsuki Watanabe maintained the sequential specimen register and produced field sketches of flowers before pressing. You Watanabe recorded habitat descriptions and assisted in matching duplicate specimens with the corresponding register entries, while Koidzumi and Nakai concentrated on comparative morphology and preliminary identification. The resulting collections were incorporated into later examinations of floristic differences between the Pacific and Sea of Japan sides of northern Honshu.

The expedition’s documentation reflected the increasing use of standardized locality data in Japanese botany. Earlier labels frequently identified a province or mountain without specifying elevation or slope orientation. The 1908 registers instead linked each collection number to a dated route segment, an approximate elevation, and a description of the surrounding plant community. This information allowed later researchers to distinguish geographical variation from differences caused by developmental stage or specimen preparation.

Illustration and taxonomic documentation

Watanabe’s principal technical contribution concerned the relationship between illustration and the type specimen. A preserved plant could establish the material basis of a name, but compression often altered the visible orientation of flowers and concealed the spatial relationship among their parts. Watanabe therefore prepared dissected views before specimens were permanently mounted whenever the collecting record indicated that the material might represent an undescribed taxon.

Her drawings were not themselves nomenclatural types under the emerging rules of botanical nomenclature when corresponding physical material existed. They nevertheless formed part of the documentary context used to interpret that material. In several university accessions, annotations cross-referenced a mounted specimen, a field register, and an illustration sheet carrying the same collection number. The arrangement permitted the reconstruction of observations made at different stages between collection and publication.

Watanabe also revised older plates that had been copied from foreign floras without direct comparison to Japanese specimens. These revisions did not merely alter external appearance. They replaced generalized diagrams with measurements derived from locally collected material and separated variable characters from those used in identification. This work supported the gradual differentiation of Japanese regional forms from superficially similar plants described elsewhere in northeastern Asia.

Herbarium administration

After 1915, Watanabe devoted a larger proportion of her work to collection management. The expansion of the university herbarium created recurring problems involving duplicate numbers, obsolete place names, and specimens transferred from private collections without complete documentation. She developed concordance registers that preserved the original wording of labels while connecting it to the institute’s revised catalogue.

This administrative work also addressed changes in taxonomic classification. A specimen originally filed under one genus could be reassigned after comparative study without erasing its previous identification. Watanabe’s registers retained the sequence of determinations and identified the botanist responsible for each revision. The system distinguished nomenclatural change from physical relocation, thereby reducing the risk that a renamed specimen would be catalogued as a separate accession.

Her later work included the preparation of teaching sets assembled from duplicate specimens. These sets were used in instruction on plant morphology and taxonomic comparison without requiring repeated handling of reference collections. The duplicates retained their original collection numbers, allowing observations made in the classroom to be checked against the primary herbarium record.

Historical assessment

Watanabe’s career illustrates the division of labor underlying the production of early twentieth-century botanical literature. Published taxonomic names were usually attributed to the authors who prepared the formal descriptions, whereas specimen processing, register maintenance, and illustration were treated as institutional functions. Examination of surviving accession records identifies these activities as interconnected stages rather than independent forms of work.

Her surviving materials are distributed among specimen folders, bound field registers, and plate collections rather than preserved as a separate personal archive. Consequently, the scope of her work is established through repeated collection numbers and handwriting comparisons across institutional records. These materials document how field observations were converted into stable references for plant taxonomy during the expansion of university-based natural history in Japan.
