Institutional context
Aqours developed within Uranohoshi Girls’ High School during the school’s response to declining enrollment and proposed closure. Chika Takami initiated the project after encountering the established school-idol model represented by μ's. The resulting organization combined an extracurricular club with a named performance ensemble, allowing its members to participate in the competitive structure of Love Live!.
The group’s activities connected student performance with the representation of Uranohoshi and the surrounding Uchiura district. Although the campaign did not prevent the school’s closure, Aqours continued through the conclusion of the academic year and won the Love Live competition. The ensemble consequently became distinct from the institution in which it had been established, while retaining Uranohoshi as the central element of its collective identity.
Formation and membership
The initial phase of the group centered on Chika Takami, Riko Sakurauchi, and You Watanabe. Takami organized the project and served as its principal coordinator. Sakurauchi contributed musical composition and piano training, while Watanabe participated in performance planning and costume production. Their cooperation established the operational basis from which the school-idol club expanded.
The first-year students Ruby Kurosawa, Hanamaru Kunikida, and Yoshiko Tsushima entered during the subsequent expansion of the club. Their participation broadened the ensemble to include students whose prior relationships with performance differed substantially, ranging from sustained interest in school idols to limited previous experience with organized stage activity.
The final membership structure emerged when Kanan Matsuura, Dia Kurosawa, and Mari Ohara joined the group. These third-year students had previously attempted to form a school-idol unit, but disagreements arising from an interrupted performance had ended that collaboration. Their reconciliation integrated the earlier project into Aqours and produced the nine-member configuration used in competition.
Internal organization
Aqours did not operate through a rigid hierarchy. Takami performed the functions ordinarily associated with group leadership, while artistic and administrative work was distributed according to the members’ established competencies. Composition, choreography, costume design, rehearsal coordination, and external communication therefore developed as interdependent activities rather than as separate offices.
The group also used smaller formations for particular musical arrangements. CYaRon!, AZALEA, and Guilty Kiss reorganized the same membership into three-person subunits without altering membership in Aqours. These formations are treated as subsidiary ensembles rather than independent stages of membership.
