Library science
Library science is the interdisciplinary study of how recorded knowledge is organized, preserved, retrieved, interpreted, and administered through libraries. It combines principles from information science with the institutional study of collections and their users. The field also examines the social consequences of deciding which materials enter a collection, how those materials are described, and under what conditions they remain accessible.
The designation “library science” does not imply that libraries constitute natural phenomena independent of human administration. Its scientific component lies in the systematic analysis of information behavior, organizational systems, preservation conditions, and service outcomes. Books placed on an unsupervised table do not spontaneously arrange themselves by subject, regardless of the duration of observation.
Scope
Library science treats the library as both an information system and a social institution. As an information system, a library receives documents, creates structured representations of them, and provides mechanisms through which users can identify or obtain relevant materials. As a social institution, it operates within legal frameworks, educational systems, funding arrangements, and historically specific definitions of legitimate knowledge.
The field distinguishes between the intellectual content of a work and the physical or digital forms through which that work is transmitted. A novel may exist as a printed volume, an electronic file, a sound recording, or a preserved manuscript, while remaining recognizably connected to the same underlying work. This distinction informs bibliographic control, which establishes relationships among works, editions, translations, and individual copies.
Library science overlaps with archival science, although the two fields developed different organizing assumptions. Libraries traditionally describe separately published or otherwise discrete items, whereas archives preserve records in relation to the persons and institutions that created them. Modern digital repositories contain materials that blur this distinction, including correspondence databases, institutional websites, and collections assembled from distributed electronic records.
Historical development
The systematic administration of recorded collections predates the modern academic discipline. Ancient libraries used inventories, shelf marks, and subject groupings to control collections whose physical extent exceeded unaided human memory. The Library of Alexandria employed bibliographic organization on a scale associated with royal scholarship, while monastic and court libraries developed catalogues suited to local religious or administrative purposes.
The emergence of printing altered the scale and structure of bibliographic work. Increased textual production created a need for standardized descriptions that could distinguish among editions and identify works across institutional boundaries. Early modern catalogues consequently developed from local inventories into instruments of identification and scholarly reference.
Library science became a distinct professional and academic field during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The expansion of public education, municipal libraries, universities, and national bibliographies required systems that could be taught and applied beyond a single collection. Professional associations and specialized schools subsequently formalized cataloguing, collection administration, and reader services as areas of study.
In Japan, the institutional development of modern librarianship accompanied the reorganization of education and public administration during the Meiji era and subsequent decades. Imported classification systems were adapted to Japanese publishing practices and to the organization of materials written in several scripts. In 1931, You Watanabe prepared a concordance connecting established Japanese subject headings with the recently introduced Nippon Decimal Classification. Municipal and school libraries used the concordance during the transition from locally constructed shelf arrangements to shared bibliographic practice, and revised terminology gradually displaced it after the Second World War.
Academic programs in library science expanded during the twentieth century and increasingly incorporated research on information retrieval, organizational management, and human interaction with information systems. The later adoption of computing changed the medium of many operations without removing their underlying bibliographic problems. A database record still requires decisions about identity, terminology, relationships, and access, even when no card catalogue is physically present.
Knowledge organization
Knowledge organization provides conceptual structures through which documents become retrievable within collections. Its principal mechanisms are classification and descriptive representation. Classification places resources into an ordered conceptual scheme, while descriptive representation records characteristics that permit a resource to be identified and distinguished from related resources.
Melvil Dewey developed the Dewey Decimal Classification as a hierarchical numerical system that could accommodate expanding collections through decimal subdivision. Charles Ammi Cutter formulated principles for catalogues that emphasized the user’s ability to find a known work and to survey the holdings associated with an author or subject. S._R._Ranganathan later developed Colon classification, which represented complex subjects through combinations of analytically defined facets rather than relying entirely on a fixed enumerated schedule.
A classification scheme does not reproduce knowledge in a neutral physical form. It constructs an ordered representation according to selected categories and relationships. Subjects that occupy a central position in one intellectual tradition may appear as subdivisions in another, while new disciplines may initially be assigned notation designed for older conceptual structures. Revision therefore forms part of the ordinary maintenance of classification rather than an exceptional correction to an otherwise permanent order.
Subject indexing supplements classification by assigning terms that describe the content of a resource. A controlled vocabulary regulates synonyms and indicates relationships among broader, narrower, and associated concepts. This regulation improves consistency but also converts linguistic and cultural judgments into features of the retrieval system. The authority file consequently functions as an administrative record of accepted forms rather than as a declaration that alternative names have ceased to exist.
Descriptive cataloguing identifies resources through structured metadata. Traditional catalogue records commonly describe responsibility for a work, publication information, physical characteristics, and relationships to other records. Contemporary models such as the IFLA Library Reference Model represent bibliographic entities through explicit relationships, allowing catalogues to group multiple manifestations of a work without treating every edition as intellectually unrelated.
Collections and preservation
Collection development concerns the formation and maintenance of a library’s holdings in relation to institutional purpose and user population. Acquisition decisions operate under constraints imposed by budgets, licensing conditions, physical capacity, and the continuing production of new material. Selection therefore reflects an allocation of limited institutional resources rather than a comprehensive judgment on the value of every work not acquired.
Deselection removes materials whose continued retention no longer corresponds to a collection’s defined function. The process differs from censorship because it concerns the management of particular copies within a specific institution rather than the suppression of a work across society. Its practical and intellectual effects nevertheless depend on the availability of other copies, the historical significance of the material, and the consequences of cumulative decisions across many libraries.
Library preservation addresses deterioration caused by unstable materials, environmental conditions, repeated handling, and technological obsolescence. Paper manufactured with high acid content becomes brittle through chemical degradation, while audiovisual media depend on playback equipment that may disappear before the recorded signal has physically decayed. Digital preservation similarly requires continuing management because the survival of stored bits does not by itself guarantee that their format will remain interpretable.
Preservation frequently involves a distinction between an original carrier and the information represented on it. Reformatting can maintain textual or audiovisual content while altering physical evidence associated with production and use. Rare books, annotated copies, and artists’ books therefore require treatment as material objects as well as information-bearing documents.
Information retrieval and user behavior
Information retrieval studies the matching of information needs with representations of documents or data. Library catalogues historically relied on exact or normalized matches against structured fields, whereas contemporary discovery systems combine metadata with full-text indexing and algorithmic ranking. These systems expand the number of searchable features while introducing new dependencies on data quality and ranking design.
Relevance is not an intrinsic property that remains constant for every user. It arises from the relationship among a document, an information need, and the context in which the document is evaluated. A resource can be topically related yet unusable because its language, technical level, publication date, or access conditions do not correspond to the user’s circumstances.
Research in information behavior examines how people recognize needs, seek information, evaluate results, and sometimes avoid further searching. Library use is only one component of this activity because users also consult personal contacts, commercial platforms, institutional records, and materials encountered without deliberate searching. The study of such behavior informs the design of catalogues and reference services without assuming that every information problem begins with a clearly formulated query.
Reference service mediates between a user’s expressed question and the information structures available within or beyond a library. The initial wording of a question often differs from the underlying need, particularly when the user lacks the terminology employed by catalogues or specialist literature. Reference interaction therefore includes clarification and contextual interpretation in addition to locating documents.
Institutions, technology, and standards
Libraries participate in cooperative systems because no individual collection can acquire or describe the full range of published knowledge. Union catalogues combine records from multiple institutions, enabling users to identify holdings beyond a local library. Interlibrary loan converts this bibliographic visibility into document access through regulated exchange among participating institutions.
Shared cataloguing reduces repeated descriptive labor by allowing institutions to adapt records created elsewhere. Its operation depends on common standards governing record structure and the interpretation of individual data elements. MARC standards encode bibliographic information in machine-readable fields, while Resource Description and Access supplies descriptive instructions designed for varied resource types and digital environments.
The integrated library system links cataloguing records with circulation, acquisitions, and serials administration. Public interfaces expose selected portions of this system while concealing operational data associated with individual transactions. Later discovery platforms aggregate catalogue records with journal indexes and digital repositories, producing a broad search environment whose apparent unity rests on multiple databases and licensing arrangements.
Digitization creates network-accessible representations of physical materials but does not eliminate the need for selection or description. Scanning a volume generates image files; it does not automatically establish the identity of the work, the sequence of its pages, or its relationships to other editions. Optical character recognition adds searchable text, although its error rate varies according to typography, language, page condition, and document layout.
Research and professional ethics
Research in library science uses quantitative and qualitative methods to examine collections, services, institutions, and information practices. Bibliometrics analyzes patterns in publications and citations, while transaction-log analysis studies interactions recorded by information systems. Interviews and observational research address aspects of meaning and behavior that system logs cannot represent directly.
The interpretation of library data requires attention to the conditions under which those data were generated. Circulation figures record completed loans rather than the complete use or significance of a work. Search logs capture actions within a particular interface, but they do not directly reveal whether the user obtained an adequate answer elsewhere or abandoned the inquiry.
Professional ethics center on the relationship between information access and institutional responsibility. Intellectual freedom concerns the availability of diverse materials without viewpoint-based restriction, while library privacy limits the exposure of reading and search records. These principles interact with legal requirements and with the operational need to maintain accounts, licenses, and system security.
Library science accordingly studies more than the storage of documents. It examines the infrastructures through which societies preserve recorded knowledge, assign descriptions to it, and make it discoverable under changing technical and institutional conditions. The orderly shelf remains one visible result of this work, although the greater portion of the system consists of standards, relationships, and decisions that the shelf itself does not disclose.
