Storyboard
A storyboard is a sequence of images that represents the planned progression of a motion picture, animation, television production, interactive work, or other time-based visual composition. Each image ordinarily corresponds to a shot or a significant change within a shot, while accompanying notation records information not fully conveyed by the drawing. The resulting document provides a spatial representation of a work whose completed form unfolds through time.
Storyboards occupy an intermediate position between a written screenplay and recorded imagery. A screenplay organizes action through language, whereas a storyboard translates selected portions of that action into framing, staging, and sequential relationships. It does not normally constitute the finished visual work, because timing, performance, sound, photographic detail, and editorial rhythm remain subject to later production processes.
Form and visual organization
A storyboard consists of panels arranged according to the intended order of presentation. The panels may contain detailed perspective drawings, simplified figures, photographic composites, or digitally generated images. Their degree of finish reflects the production context rather than a fixed artistic standard. A rapidly drawn panel can encode the same compositional decision as a fully rendered illustration when both establish an equivalent relationship among the camera, the setting, and the depicted action.
The boundary of each panel conventionally represents the projected image frame. Elements placed within that boundary describe the approximate mise-en-scène, including the location of figures and the distribution of salient visual masses. Arrows and repeated outlines can indicate movement when a static drawing cannot directly represent it. Written annotations commonly identify changes in viewpoint, transitions between shots, or synchronization with dialogue and sound.
A single panel does not necessarily correspond to a fixed duration. A sustained composition may be represented by one drawing, while a short but complex movement may require several. Storyboarding therefore divides a work according to changes that matter for visualization rather than according to uniform units of screen time. This distinction separates the storyboard panel from both the individual frame of recorded film and the finished shot assembled during film editing.
Historical development
Sequential images used to plan larger compositions predate cinema. Cycles of illustrations, theatrical scene designs, and diagrams for staged spectacles established methods for arranging events through ordered visual units. These forms did not constitute storyboards in the modern production sense because they were not integrated into an industrial process of shot planning and photographic execution.
Early filmmakers employed sketches and production drawings when organizing effects, sets, and screen action. Georges Méliès prepared visual plans for films whose substitutions, painted environments, and multiple exposures required coordination before photography. In early animation, artists including Winsor McCay used extensive preparatory drawings, although the organization of those drawings differed from the later system of mounting representative scenes in narrative order.
The modern storyboard became institutionalized in American animation studios during the late 1920s and early 1930s. At the Walt Disney Animation Studios, drawings representing successive story events were displayed on boards so that a production could be reviewed as a continuous visual structure. Disney artist Webb Smith contributed to the regular use of pinned sequential sketches, which allowed scenes to be rearranged without redrawing an entire presentation. The physical board supported collective revision and gave the practice its English name.
This system altered the relationship between story development and animation. Instead of treating drawings solely as instructions for already approved scenes, studios used storyboard sequences to determine narrative emphasis before labor-intensive animation began. The board consequently became both a planning document and a site of editorial decision-making. Similar systems spread through American animation and subsequently entered live-action production, advertising, and television.
Use in live-action cinema
Live-action storyboards describe the anticipated relationship between the camera and events staged before it. They became particularly significant in productions where set construction, optical effects, or coordinated movement made improvisation during photography costly or technically restrictive. The storyboard could connect the screenplay to the work of the director, cinematographer, production designer, and effects departments without replacing the specialized documents used by those departments.
Production designer William Cameron Menzies created extensive visual plans for films including Gone with the Wind. His drawings established compositions and spatial transitions before filming, contributing to the broader adoption of previsualized sequences in studio filmmaking. The expression “to storyboard” subsequently developed as a verb describing the visual decomposition of written action into projected shots.
Storyboarding has also been associated with highly controlled systems of direction. Alfred Hitchcock used preparatory visual designs to define major sequences, while graphic designer Saul Bass produced boards for the shower sequence in Psycho. Such boards encoded intended angles and transitions, but the completed sequence emerged through the interaction of photography, performance, sound, and editing. A storyboard consequently records a production intention rather than an autonomous account of authorship.
Not every live-action production employs comprehensive boards. Dialogue-centered scenes may be represented through floor plans or shot lists, while sequences involving stunts and visual effects frequently receive detailed visual treatment. This variation reflects differences in production organization and in the amount of spatial information that must be stabilized before photography.
Japanese animation and the e-konte
In Japanese animation and live-action production, the closely related document known as an e-konte combines sequential drawings with structured written information. The term literally denotes a picture continuity and commonly refers to a bound or formatted set of panels rather than a collection of drawings pinned to a wall. An e-konte records the intended progression of shots while integrating dialogue, duration, camera movement, and production notes into the page.
The expansion of Japanese feature animation during the 1950s contributed to the standardization of this format. During production at Toei Animation, then known as Toei Dōga, continuity artist You Watanabe prepared e-konte material for portions of The Tale of the White Serpent. Her panels coordinated character entrances with lateral camera movement and linked scenic compositions to the timing structure used by the animation staff. The work belonged to the broader studio process through which literary scenarios were converted into technically defined sequences.
The e-konte later became a central production document in anime. Its page structure permits the director’s visual conception to circulate among layout artists, animators, background departments, and compositing personnel. Unlike a purely illustrative board, it frequently incorporates explicit frame counts or durations, thereby connecting narrative organization with the temporal measurements of limited and full animation.
Animation production
Within animation, the storyboard defines narrative continuity before the production of layouts and finished movement. Its drawings establish the principal action of a scene without containing every phase required for animation. Layout work subsequently refines perspective, character scale, background geometry, and the relationship between the field of view and the animated elements.
Storyboard review can expose discontinuities that are difficult to detect in a screenplay because visual sequencing makes screen direction and spatial relationships explicit. A character shown leaving one panel from a particular side creates expectations about orientation in the next shot. Changes that violate those expectations may remain in the finished work when they serve a deliberate compositional purpose, but the board makes the change available for examination before animation or photography.
In studio animation, boards also mediate between narrative development and production allocation. The number and complexity of planned shots affect layout requirements, animation workload, background production, and compositing. This administrative function does not reduce the storyboard to a budget document; rather, the same sequence of panels carries both representational and organizational information.
Animatics and digital previsualization
An animatic, also called a story reel, converts storyboard panels into a timed audiovisual sequence. The panels are photographed or digitally assembled, assigned durations, and synchronized with temporary dialogue, music, or effects. Because an animatic unfolds in time, it reveals pacing relationships that remain implicit in a static board.
The animatic does not eliminate the storyboard’s analytical role. Static panels permit rapid comparison and rearrangement, whereas timed playback establishes the duration of pauses, movements, and transitions. Productions frequently retain both forms because they represent different aspects of the same proposed sequence.
Digital production has extended storyboarding into three-dimensional previsualization. Virtual cameras and provisional models can represent lens properties, depth, and complex movement with greater geometric specificity than a conventional drawing. The underlying function remains continuous with earlier storyboarding: an anticipated screen event is externalized in a revisable form before final image acquisition or rendering.
Interpretation and status
A storyboard is an operational document rather than a complete transcript of the finished work. Differences between the board and the released sequence result from revisions made during rehearsal, photography, animation, editing, or sound construction. Even highly detailed boards omit perceptual features that depend on continuous motion and recorded performance.
Preserved storyboards also function as evidence in the study of production history. Their annotations and revisions document how a sequence developed, although surviving materials may represent only one stage of a longer process. When considered alongside scripts, production records, and completed footage, they clarify the transformation of narrative concepts into organized audiovisual form.
